Ron Davies tops brother Dutch, wins the Summer Fest at Challenger
Indiana, PA (August 10, 2003) - Ron Davies from Warren, PA held off a
strong mid-race challenge from his younger brother Dutch in winning the
40-lap Summer Fest Late Model event at the Challenger Raceway on Sunday
evening earning $5,000. It was the Grand Re-opening of the facility following
a massive construction project, and hundreds of tons of dirt was moved
to make a better and safer track area. Summer Fest Championship victories
also went to Andy Teno from Portage in the Modifieds, and to Joe Kelley
from Mt. Pleasant in the Pure Stocks.
The 40-lap Summer Fest Championship Late Model race started with Ron Davies
and Alex Ferree leading the field on the starting grid. Davies took the
lead as the race went green, as early yellows on laps 1 and 3 slowed the
pace. Davies led on the restart as Rob Blair passed Ferree to take over
second on lap 4. As the lap counter hit ten, second was being hotly contested
as Bair had his hands full with Ferree and Dutch Davies. The younger Davies
brother moved to third on lap 12, and was second on lap 15. With Ron having
a lengthy advantage, Dutch was slicing into his lead and doing it quickly.
Race traffic was an issue as well, as Dutch was a car length behind at
lap 18. A lap 18 caution appeared to clear the track for the leaders,
as the brothers battled hard for the race lead. Dutch was unable to make
a pass, and his car seemed to fade as the laps progressed. Late caution
periods bunched the field on laps 29 and 35, but Ron was able to hold
off the challenges of Dutch in scoring the victory. Blair was third, as
Keith Barbara was fourth. Matt Gaston advanced from 13th starting spot
to fifth, as Matt Lux, Steve Everhart, Doug Horton, Ron Delano, Jr., and
Dave Satterlee rounded out the top ten. With a strong field of 51 cars
on hand, Heat winners were Nick Jones, Bobby Bertges, Everhart, Satterlee,
Mike Johnson, and Barbara. Lynn Geisler and Dave Peterman took the B-Mains.
Andy Teno made a three-wide move in lapped traffic pay off, as he scored
the victory in the 30-lap Modified Summer Fest Feature. Bob Rougeaux had
been showing the way as a long segment of green flag racing ran from a
lap 6 caution. The lead battle continued through lap 20, as traffic was
an issue. With a lapped car in the middle, Rougeaux chose the inside to
clear the slower car on lap 23. Teno chose the high side, and made the
move work as he took the lead at the line on lap 24. A final caution period
on lap 25 slowed the pace a final time, but Teno brought his Mopar-powered
mount home a winner. Rougeaux was a close second, as Denny Perigo, Jeff
Jones, and Bruce Dreistadt filled the top five. Filling the top ten were
Josh Cramer, Nick Cramer, Jack Smith, Clate Copeman, and Bobby Watt. Rich
Logan and Carl McKinney took Heat wins, but both were eliminated from
the main in a first-lap incident.
Joe Kelley survived nine caution periods and several challenges in winning
the 30-lap Pure Stock Summer Fest Feature. The second through sixth positions
were shuffled through the race like a deck of cards, as Kelley held the
field at bay. Herman Bertolini made the strongest run at the leader, but
was unable to pull off a pass. Kelley led all 30 laps in posting the win,
as Bob Connor came home second. A late slip dropped Bertolini to third,
as Jamey Swank and Dennis Fenton filled the top five. Heat winners over
the 30 entries were Jeff Enos, Tom Truxell, and Tommy Dembowski, as the
Last Chance Race went to Jason Fosnaught.
The next event scheduled for the Challenger Raceway will be the annual
year-end special Fall Fest IX. Friday, October 10 will be the 35-lap Fall
Stars Challenge of the Champions Classic, paying $4,000 to the winner,
with the Senior Series in competition. That will be the kickoff for Fall
Fest IX on October 11-12, as the MACS Late Models will headline the program.
Their Championship race on Sunday will pay $15,000 to the winner, with
at least $1500 going to all starters. Also on the Fall Fest card are the
York Triathlon Series Modifieds, T-USA Modified Lites, Pure Stocks, and
Strictly Stocks. Challenger Raceway is located 6.4 miles southwest of
US 422 on SR 286, then one mile north on McIntyre Road. For more information,

Spring Fest to start the Western Pennsylvania racing season at Challenger
Indiana, PA (March 16) - The Challenger Raceway is best known for their
annual "Fall Fest" racing program in October, that ends the
racing season in Western Pennsylvania. Owners and promoters Jack and Donna
Lentz have always wanted to have a big early season event, so for the
first time in 2003 they have added their first "Spring Fest"
to the track's schedule. After many years of hosting the area's final
big race, for the first time they will host the area's first big race.
The 2003 racing season will begin with Spring Fest on Sunday, March 23,
2003. Spring Fest will see three divisions in competition, headlined by
the Late Models. They will compete for one of the area's largest payoffs,
as the main event will pay $5,000 to the winner. The Modifieds will be
on the card paying $400 to win, as will the Pure Stocks paying $250 to
the winner.
With this being the area's first on-track activity, the Challenger Raceway
has also scheduled a Practice Day. This will allow the race teams a chance
to test their new and reworked race cars for the first time. It will go
the day before the big race on Saturday, March 22. This is open to all
classes.
The gates will open both days at 12:00 noon. Sunday's racing will start
at 3:00. In the event that the unpredictable March weather does not cooperate,
both days will be rescheduled to March 29-30. The grandstands will be
free of charge for Saturday's practice, to allow the area's fans a first
chance at seeing the 2003 race cars. Saturday's pit fee will be $15. On
Sunday, the adult General Admission will be $17, ages 12-15 will be $8.50,
and 5-11 $5. Sunday's pit fee will be $25. The Late Models will have a
$40 entry fee for Spring Fest. There will be no entry fee for the Modified
or Pure Stock divisions.
The track will once again host a special events only schedule in 2003.
As the track's scheduled construction project is finally close to becoming
a reality, this may be the final event in the track's current configuration.
