Eldora Swap Meet Returns
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 27) -- Eldora Speedway will officially conclude its
2003 season with its annual Swap Meet and Flea Market on Saturday, November
1. Last year’s initial event attracted a stellar number of vendors
despite chilly temperatures.
And, just as last year, the event will be staged on the speedway grounds,
utilizing the multi-purpose building, as well as the area just north of
turns three and four; allowing for inside and outside vending spaces.
Vendor set-up is slated for 8:00 - 10:00, with the gates to buyers swinging
open at 10:00, and remaining open until 3:00.
Further information may be obtained by contacting the Eldora Speedway
office at 937.338.3815 between 9:00 and 5:00.
Haudenschild Captures Eldora's Mopar Million
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 20) - Jac Haudenschild created history Saturday night
at Eldora Speedway with a stunning, but narrow, $200,000 victory in the
initial Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora.
The one million dollar payoff attracted 138 non-winged Sprint race teams,
with representation from every major sanctioning body, including the host
United States Auto Club (USAC) and every corner of the compass. But when
the checkered flag fell after 40 laps of the most competitive racing to
ever grace Eldora’s famed one-half mile clay oval , it was Haudenschild
ruling the roost.
And for the popular Wooster, Ohio native, it marked the second time that
Haudenschild created history at Eldora. Back in 1993, he etched his name
into the books as the first Sprint driver to win $100,000 in a single
race, with his victory in the inaugural Historical Big One for winged
Sprint Cars. Saturday’s $200,00 Mopar Million victory has raised
that standard.
As expected, the huge payoff generated quite a bit of excitement and
many anxious moments with a multitude of story lines - none of which;
however, topped Haudenschild’s exciting ten foot victory over Stevie
Smith, in his first-ever non-winged Sprint attempt. Dickie Gaines, a last-minute
pick to pilot the Hoffman Brothers back-up car, crossed the line in third
after leading nine laps earlier, while pre-race favorite J. J. Yeley closed
in to finish fourth and upstart driver Rob Chaney captured fifth.
A demanding schedule of two single-lap time trial runs, ten qualifying
heat races and a series of five elimination Main events narrowed the field
down to 26 starters.
Outside pole sitter Russ Gamester, a USAC veteran, jumped into the early
lead of the 40-lap Mopar Million, but that moment of glory lasted for
a mere lap, as Dean Jacobs, a standout in winged Sprint Cars, was making
a rare wingless appearance, and turned some heads when he charged from
fourth to take the lead on the second lap.
Gamester hung on for second after two laps, with Chaney in third, Haudenschild
fourth and Bill Rose fifth, but behind them, there was a lot of movement.
Within two more laps, Gaines was up to sixth after starting 15th, and
the following lap he advanced one more spot, up to fifth, knocking Rose
to sixth.
The crowd began to foresee the future ahead of them, and Gaines didn’t
let them down.
By lap 15, Gaines moved up one more spot, to fourth, with Smith’s
increased confidence advancing him to fifth.
Like a shot out of the cannon, Gaines’ momentum was unparalleled.
On lap 18 he moved to third behind Jacobs and Gamester, and two laps later
he then disposed of both of them in a single sweeping pass off of turn
two to take the lead.
Gamester hung on to second, as Jacobs dropped all the way back to fourth,
with Haudenschild slipping up to third. Lap 22 found Haudenschild moving
to second,to create a race-within a race) as the partisan crowd voiced
their satisfaction. At this point, their were many races within races.
Bud Kaeding, after transferring through the B-Main at starting in 25th,
was up to 15th.
Fast qualifier Tracy Hines had started in the 21st spot, a provisional
for time trial cars, and was up to 18th, as his drive to the front was
beginning. And then, there was Yeley, who was up to 7th after starting
13th.
Gaines’ substantial lead was negated on lap 24, in a four-car pile-up
off turn four.
With the accident scene cleared up, Gaines re-assumed his position in
front, with Haudenschild knocking on his door. Haudenschild tried high
and low to overtake Gaines, with the deciding moment set up on lap 28,
when the yellow appeared for a disappointed Kaeding. His powerful drive
from the rear came to an end with heavy contact to the fourth turn wall,
while running 11th.
That gave Haudenschild the momentum he was looking for, as on the restart,
he shot past Gaines to take the lead amongst the roar of the crowd. One
lap later, the yellow flag came out again, as Todd Kane climbed the rear
bumper of Kevin Huntley; locking the two cars together.
This gave Gaines one last shot at Haudenschild, but something became
amiss, and Gaines wasn’t able to keep up the torrid pace he was
previously running. Smith took advantage of the situation to settle in
behind Haudenschild on lap 32, with Yeley up to fourth. Of note, Hines
had advanced to 10th.
While there wasn’t much jockeying for position among the front
runners through the closing stages, the distance between them became tighter
and tighter.
Lapped traffic came into play in the late stages to stymie Haudenschild
a bit. Smith grasped at the moment and with the white flag in the air,
brought the crowd to their feet, as he reeled in Haudenschild. By turn
three he was on his bumper and attempted a low move through the final
turn, only to fall short by ten feet.
Haudenschild recorded Sprint Car racing’s biggest win by finishing
ahead of Smith, Gaines, Yeley and Chaney.

Fans Jump On Board Mopar Million Bandwagon
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 12) -- Interest in the upcoming Mopar Million Sprint
at Eldora continues to escalate. The unprecedented September 19 and 20
Eldora Speedway event, which carries a hefty one million dollar payoff
for non-winged Sprint Cars, has attracted 150 paid car entries and now
the fans are jumping on board.
Members of the internet site www.hoseheads.com have established a Halfway
Award that has grown even beyond their expectations. Already, monies have
been contributed by site members in nine states, even as far away as California,
and with the goal of $500 already met, a second award, Best Appearing
Car and Crew, has been developed, as well.
In keeping with the halfway theme, the first $500 collected will be presented
to the driver sitting in 13th position (half of the starting field) on
the 20th lap (halfway through the 40-lap main event).
The balance of the money collected will be presented to the best appearing
car and crew, as voted upon by the Hosehead members in attendance at the
Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora, an event carrying Special Event status
by the United States Auto Club (USAC). That award will be presented in
special pre-race ceremonies prior to the start of the historic event on
Saturday, Sept. 20.
Both award honorees will also receive specially engraved plagues, as
donated by the Hosehead members.
As a site dedicated to Sprint car racing, the Hosehead members felt it
only fitting that they join in on the excitement generated by the Mopar
Million and reward the drivers and teams, in some way, for their participation.
Allan Holland, owner and founder of www.hoseheads.com, currently leads
all donors with his $200 contribution.
Persons interested in more information can contact the Hoseheads website.
Additional contributions can also be made at Eldora throughout the Mopar
Million weekend.
Schlieper Rules the World
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 6) -- Following Saturday night’s dominating drive,
there is little doubt in anyone’s mind that Dan Schlieper is truly
the ruler of the World. The Sullivan, Wisconsin native topped a stellar
field of 222 entrants to capture dirt Late Model racing’s premier
event - the World 100 at Eldora Speedway.
For his efforts in the 33rd annual event, Schlieper took home $36,000
and the coveted globed trophy signifying a World 100 victory.
After qualifying sixth quickest in Friday night’s time trial runs,
Schlieper was locked in the sixth heat race on Saturday. Under the World
100 format, that is the favored heat, as the winner earns a pole starting
position in the ensuing 100 lap grind around Eldora’s notorious
one-half mile clay oval.
A three-car invert, as determined through a draw by the event’s
quickest qualifier, Scott Bloomquist, found Schlieper starting third in
his heat. The incentive was just too great to pass by. Schlieper shot
into the lead on the first lap of his heat race and never looked back,
to record the win and the opportunity to pace the 24-car starting field.
And when the green flag dropped for the pinnacle event of dirt Late Model
racing, the results were much the same. Schlieper took advantage of that
pole starting position to best outside pole sitter Matt Miler into the
first turn and from point forward, let the balance of the field battle
amongst themselves.
He let it be known that he wasn’t about to be denied a victory.
Within four laps, he had built up a ten-car length lead over Miller,
while Chub Frank, Ray Cook and Dale McDowell engaged into a dogfight for
third spot. And ten laps later, on lap 14, Schlieper began lapping the
field.
At that point, Miller continued to hold down second spot, with Frank
in third, while Bloomquist moved up from seventh to fourth. Cook slipped
to fifth.
Of note, defending World 100 champion, Brian Birkhofer, who had failed
to advance through the heat race action and had to fall back on a ‘time-trial’
provisional spot, had moved from 19th to 13th by this point and was showing
early promise of a great finish.
The event’s first caution flag fell on lap 34 when five-time World
100 champion Billy Moyer coasted to a stop on the track in turn four.
Moyer got re-fired and shot into the pit area for a quick stop before
returning to the race, only to drop back off the pace a few laps later.
He was credited with a disappointing 23rd place finish.
When the field regrouped, Schlieper again out paced Miller to retain
supremacy, while Bloomquist had moved up to third, followed by McDowell
and Frank, who was beginning to show signs of slowing off the pace. Birkhofer
was up to eighth.
At the halfway point, Schlieper was in another world all his own.
But his crew was signaling that Bloomquist was on the move, in second
spot, and inching forward. McDowell was having one his best-ever Eldora
performances and was up to third, while Miller dropped to fourth and Steve
Shaver jumped up to fifth. Cook was beginning to falter and had dropped
to tenth.
A couple of drivers who were showing remarkable advancement by the mid-point
were Darrell Lanigan and RJ Conley, who had moved up to 8th and 9th spots,
from their 14th and 16th starting slots.
On lap 59, the yellow flag again was displayed as Don O’Neal stopped
on the track.
With Bloomquist in second and now with striking distance, the capacity
crowed was on their feet expecting a dogfight on the restart. But Schlieper
was undaunted and never gave in to Bloomquist’s pressure.
The race went green to the finish and Schlieper was destined to win.
Within the closing stages however, Bloomquist rose to the occasion and
appeared to have the momentum to stage a reversal of last year’s
race, when he had lost the battle within the final few feet of the race.
As the white flag was shown, Bloomquist gave his machine one last shot
of speed and reeled in Schlieper, but Schlieper’s lead was just
too much and the rally fell short.
Schlieper recorded the biggest win of his career and the emotion in victory
lane was chaotic. He and his entire crew lept from the stage and right
to the wheel fence, where they climbed it to the delight of the crowd.
Bloomquist recorded a runner-up finish for the second year in a row,
while McDowell finished third, his best-ever finish in the World 100.
Birkhofer’s strong drive netted him a fourth place finish, while
Shaver was credited with fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Miller,
Conley, John Gill and Earl Pearson, Jr. Fourteen of the 24 starters were
on the lead lap at the finish and 19 cars were still on the track.

Eldora Rained Out
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 31) Persistent showers brought to a halt all action
planned for Sunday night at Eldora Speedway.
Just prior to the scheduled opening of the gates for the tripleheader
program of Late Model, Modified and Stock Car racing, rains moved in to
the area and thwarted any activity on the one-half mile clay oval.
Next on the Eldora agenda will be the World 100 for dirt Late Models,
the track’s signature event, this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5 &
6).
More Than Driver to Win Bragging Rights at Mopar Million
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 30) -- There is little doubt that the loudest bragging
rights that accompany a victory in the upcoming Mopar Million Sprint at
Eldora will go to the winning driver, but there are many “battles
within the battle”.
The anxiety continues to grow in anticipation of this unprecedented September
19 and 20 event at Ohio’s legendary Eldora Speedway. And rightfully
so. With one million dollars in prize money on the line for the 150 entered
non-winged Sprint Car teams, the event will enter the history books as
the richest event in Sprint Car history, whether non-winged or winged.
Lending a watchful eye to the Earl Baltes created promotion is the United
States Auto Club (USAC), who has granted Special Event status to the Mopar
Million Sprint at Eldora.
There are many manufacturers and suppliers hoping to attach their name
to the driver who walks on to Eldora’s hallowed victory stage September
20 to collect $200,000 as a result of winning the 40-lap Mopar Million.
Perhaps the stiffest competition for those desired bragging rights reigns
supreme among the chassis, engine and tire manufacturers.
In regards to the chassis department, the Twister Chassis, as represented
by current USAC Sprint point leader J.J. Yeley and a host of others, may
be the hot ticket going into the Mopar event. Yeley’s strong and
successful season to date has prompted many phone calls to the Twister
office.
However, many of the other chassis companies are stepping up their programs
in an attempt to get their nameplate recognized as a propellant to that
lucrative victory. Familiar names gracing various victory lanes in recent
weeks include, among others, Stealth, Eagle, Maxim, J & J and Schnee.
Then there is the power plant.
While the Chevrolet name tag has been dominant over the years, Ford has
stepped into the Sprint Car scene, as has Mopar, who, without question,
would love to see their nameplate attached to the winner. As far as engine
builders, Gaerte Engines have been around Sprint Car racing for many years
and have powered many teams to high-dollar wins, but the competition for
engine supremacy has become tougher in recent seasons. Among those spicing
up the ‘engine wars’ are Kistler, Fisher and Wesmar, to name
just a few.
And probably the hottest competition among the dirt Sprint Car fraternity
is that between the tire manufacturers. While no longer a key player,
the fabled Goodyear tire still appears occasionally but the big battle
is between the American Racer (formerly McCreary) and Hoosier brands.
For years, McCreary dominated the non-winged Sprint scene, but in recent
years, Hoosier has spearheaded an effort to dethrone that effort.
Without a doubt, the driver that sits atop the field after 40 grueling
laps in the Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora will become a household name
in the racing world, and the manufacturers that helped in that effort
will make their presence known as well.
Only a few weeks remain before the September 19 and 20 running of the
Mopar Million Sprint and Eldora, and the resultant earning of ‘bragging
rights’.
DIRT Big Blocks Return For More Money
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 29) -- When the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super
DIRT Series rolled into Eldora Speedway last season for their debut at
the legendary one-half mile clay oval, the anticipation was high. And
when the checkered flag fell on Brett Hearn as Eldora’s inaugural
DIRT winner, there was even greater anticipation - that of a return visit.
Promoter Earl Baltes has granted that wish and the points chasers of
the rugged Super DIRT Series will be returning to Eldora’s high-banks
on Saturday, September 27, along with the Sunoco sponsored American Late
Model Series (ALMS) and their Johnny Appleseed Classic.
So pleased was Baltes with the New York based ‘Big Block’
series and their caliber of racing, that he has upped the ante considerably
for this year’s invasion. And, as a reward to the fans for their
support, the general admission pricing will remain the same as that of
last season.
That infusion of cash, along with the teams’ desire to return and
fine-tune their performances from last year should ensure a duplication
of last year’s success.
Hearn thrilled the large crowd last year by making the most of an early
race pit stop to roar back from the back of the pack and overtake legendary
Bob McCreadie in the late stages of the 100-lap affair.
Although many of the teams seemed intimidated by Eldora’s steep
banking and fast speeds early on in the night, those anxieties were eased
as the night wore on and by feature time, multiple groove racing became
the norm.
Now, with one appearance under their belt, those intimidations have given
way in to an eagerness to do better than last year.
Among those hoping to topple Hearn as the king of Eldora are current
Super DIRT Series points leader Alan Johnson and McCreadie, who had dominated
much of main event last season.
For the ALMS points chasers, the Appleseed event will bring to a conclusion
their 2003 season, with four-time champion Kris Patterson attempting to
annex yet-another title, along with the $5,000 cash prize and C. J. Rayburn
chassis that accompanies it.
World 100 - a true challenge
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 22) -- Just what is the drawing factor to Eldora Speedway’s
World 100?
Undoubtedly, the prestige and instant stardom that accompanies a victory
32-year-old event is one of the biggest factors. Nearly every member of
the dirt Late Model fraternity dreams of walking on to the famed Eldora
stage to accept the renowned globed trophy that signifies a World 100
win.
But it goes deeper than that, and this year’s edition, the 33rd
annual over the weekend of September 5 and 6, will be no different.
The supreme challenge of being one of the 24 World 100 starters entices
many teams, as well as the knowledge gained by just being in the pits
and racing against the leaders of the industry.
Everyone knows that the World 100 format is rugged. It’s been discussed
and cussed by all. Regardless, the system has produced some of the most
competitive racing to be found anywhere, and has provided a multitude
of drivers the opportunity to combat each other.
Last year found five drivers making their first-ever start, nearly one-fourth
of the starting field. Since its inception in 1971, 256 drivers have taken
a World 100 green flag.
Sure a little luck goes a long way, but the team’s have to be on
top of their game.
Two rounds of time trials on Friday night narrow the entrants down to
the 120 fastest, who are then placed into one of Saturday’s six
qualifying heat races. Many consider these races to be the most grueling
of the weekend, as only the top 3 finishers advance into the finale, and
the next four go into a last-chance B-Main. The rest? They load up and
go home.
Four finishers from the B-Main also advance, with two positions reserved
for the fastest two teams from time trials that didn’t advance through
a heat.
With over 200 teams in attendance each of the past few years, and representation
from nearly every corner of the Nation, it’s like going to college
for many teams. It provides the opportunity to check out a variety of
chassis designs, as well as suspension set-ups, etc. No other race throughout
the season affords that opportunity.
When September 5 and 6 rolls around this year, the ultimate goal will
again be the trophy, while the $36,000 top prize is equally tempting.
But, the biggest draw will again be the challenges presented, as well
as the education to be received.
Entry forms have been mailed. Interested teams that have not received
that entry information are encouraged to contact the Eldora Speedway office
at 937.338.3815. Reserved seat tickets are also available at that number.
Mopar Million Sprint Format Tough
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 11) -- Getting into September’s Mopar Million Sprint
at Eldora Speedway is going to be no easy task for any of the 150 entered
teams. The complicated formula for the rich September 19 and 20, run under
the sanctioning eye of the United States Auto Club (USAC), event is very
fan-friendly, but grueling for the teams.
One-million dollars will be on the line for non-winged Sprint Cars, with
the 40 lap finale offering a previously unheard of $200,000 to the victory
and $10,000 to the 24th place finishers. The total payoff is far and away
the highest in the history of Sprint Car racing, either winged or non-winged.
Perhaps the toughest task at hand will be the time trial runs on Friday
night, September 19. Two single-lap runs will determine the starting line-ups
for the heat races that will follow.
Ten heat races, lined-up with the fastest six drivers of each heat inverted
and the rest straight up by times, will determine the first 20 positions
in the prestigious Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora. Finishers one and two
from each heat will transer to the 40 lap finale on Saturday night, while
finishers three through twelve will line up in one of Saturday’s
progressive F - B Mains.
Beginning with the F-Main, four finishers will advance to the next Main,
right up to the lucrative Mopar Million, where the first four finishers
of the B-Main will join the rewarding A-Main, along with the fastest two
time-trailers that didn’t advance through the heat races - to make
for a 26-car starting grid on the one-half mile clay oval.
Indeed the formula is tough and a tremendous challenge is at hand.
So challenging is the task that many of the entered owners have already
changed, or are considering changing, drivers in an effort to come up
with the right combination to make the cut into the starting grid of the
Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora.
Their final decision will be made on Friday afternoon, as when that team
passes through inspection and draws their qualifying round numbers, they
must announce their choice of drivers and from that point forward, there
are no driver changes.
It could prove to be interesting.
World 100 Trophy Creates Desire
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 11) -- Nowhere else than Eldora Speedway do drivers covet
a trophy more than money. And that trophy is the famed globed trophy that
signifies a victory in dirt Late Model racing’s signature event, the
World 100, which this year will be contested over the weekend of September
5 & 6 on the Rossburg, Ohio one-half mile clay oval.
There are a multitude of races throughout the Nation that offer much
higher payouts than the World 100, but none can equal the throng of entrants
chasing after a prestigious World 100 victory; a win that can make them
a household name among the racing fraternity.
This year’s 33rd annual edition of the World 100 will see a $36,000
paycheck awaiting the victor, but more importantly, that driver will take
home one of those prized globed trophies that have become synonymous with
supremacy.
Each of the past several years has seen in excess of 200 entrants chasing
after a World 100 win, making the conquest even more exciting and satisfying.
Getting into victory lane is a tough road, even for the most experienced
of teams.
Only 24 cars make the cut into the starting grid, and becoming one of
those starters requires skill, and many drivers will admit, luck, as well.
Two single-lap time trial runs on Friday night, September 5, will narrow
the field down to 120 cars, which will then be split into six 20-car heat
races on Saturday night, September 6. From this point forward, the heat
is on, as only three cars from each of those heat races transfer to the
World 100 starting line-up.
The next four finishers get a second chance by moving into the B-Main,
with only the first four finishers of that race getting into the main
event. Two additional starting berths remain for the two highest qualifying
drivers that didn’t advance through the heat races.
Brian Birkhofer was able to defeat dirt Late Model racing’s Thundering
Trio of Scott Bloomquist, Billy Moyer and Donnie Moran to reign over the
world last year.
Entry forms for the World 100 are in the mail now, and advance tickets
are available by contacting the Eldora Speedway office at 937.338.3815
during normal business hours.
Pittman takes HBO win, Meyers take Friday
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 9) -- Daryn Pittman has redeemed himself - to the tune
of $100,000. The young Owasso, OK driver, who failed to make the cut into
Eldora Speedway’s prestigious Kings Royal three weeks ago, returned
to the scene Saturday night to capture the track’s largest payout
of the year for winged Sprint Car racing - the Historical Big One (HBO).
As equally excited was Greg Wilson, who, after missing the starting field
for the HBO, took advantage of his double-duty driving duties on the night
to triumph in the companion National Racing Alliance (NRA) Sprint Invader
main event.
“I tell you what, three weeks ago, it was the lowest of lows for
me. Missing the (Kings) Royal was devastating, but to come back here and
stand on this stage as a $100,000 winner, wow, I can’t believe it”,
stated Pittman from victory lane. “Now I feel satisfied”.
Pittman’s tenacious drive got him to the front of the field and
kept him there during the waning stages of the event, but it was a $4
investment that returned him the one-hundred grand.
When Dale Blaney coasted to a stop on the track with an expired engine
on lap 31, the red flag appeared to allow for refueling. At that time,
crew chief Joe Gaerte noticed a pin hole leak in the left rear tire of
Pittman’s machine, and immediately put his finger over it, while
crew members filled the tire with Fix A Flat. Gaerte never removed his
finger until the car was pushed off for the restart and from that point
on, it was a gamble whether the fix would be permanent enough to finish
the rugged 40-lap affair.
Asked if he had any thoughts about that tire for the remainder of the
distance, Pittman replied, “Oh yes, EVERY lap”.
But it worked and Pittman was able to finally bask in the Eldora limelight.
It was Pittman charging into the lead at the onset of the eleventh annual
HBO, which was narrowed down to 24 starters from the talented 42-car field,
with Paul McMahan in hot pursuit. Jim Nier, Jason Meyers and Dale Blaney
completed the top five at that point.
It took but seven laps to encroach upon lapped traffic, as Pittman was
running a rapid pace. McMahan never lost site of Pittman, and several
times, pulled up alongside, but could never come up with the right combination
to take over the lead.
That combination finally clicked on lap 12 when he slid into the lead
and from that point, it looked like he was never going to look back. McMahan
appeared to be obsessed and was touring the notorious one-half mile clay
oval far superior than the balance of the field. But that domination came
to a quick halt on lap 15, when McMahan miscalculated the cushion in turn
one, drove up over it and bounced off the concrete retaining wall. The
car came to a quick stop and McMahan was done for the night - giving the
lead back to Pittman.
At this point, Blaney was in second, with Meyers, Randy Hannagan and
Donny Schatz following, but none of them had anything for Pittman, he
was in a world to himself.
That left the battle for the remaining positions.
Hannagan was turning in the best Eldora performance of his Eldora career
to move up to second on lap 21 and for a moment, it looked like he might
have something for Pittman. His closest challenge came on a lap 22 restart
after Jim Nier suffered a flat tire. Hannagan drove hard into turn one
and up alongside Pittman, but that only charged Pittman’s adrenaline
and he smashed the accelerator harder.
Hannagan had to relent on his charge for the win, as he was presented
a new battle - that Kings Royal winner, Steve Kinser. Hannagan and Kinser
fought back and forth, with each doing slide jobs on the other, but to
the delight of the crowd, Hannagan never gave up, not even after the lap
31 stoppage.
Bought the pace of the battle was fueled even greater on lap 35 as Stevie
Smith surprised the pair with a bold pass that moved him from fourth to
second. Smith may have been the fastest car on the track at that point,
but there was no catching Pittman, as he put himself into another time
zone and crossed the finish line some ten car lengths ahead.
Smith, finally turning his season around, crossed the line in second
with Kinser third, Meyers fourth and another youngster, Jonathan Allard
in fifth. Allard’s glory quickly failed at the scales; however,
as he machine failed to make the minimum weight requirements and Meyers
was elevated to fifth.
Wilson staged a wild dogfight with Darren Long to win the NRA finale.
Long took the lead at the green flag, with Wilson and Tim Allison behind
him. Allison disposed on Wilson on lap two and looked like he had the
ingredients to take over Long, but suddenly, on lap six, his machine lost
power coming off the fourth turn.
Allison was done for the night, and Wilson moved back into the runner-up
position.
Long’s crew members motioned to him that Wilson was now on his
rear bumper and Long seemed undaunted as he continued to lead the field.
However, in the closing stages of the race, Wilson not only moved in on
Long, but executed the pass to take the lead and victory. A fast moving
Mike Brecht also took advantage of the situation and shot by Long to take
home second spot. A disappointed Long came home third, with J. R. Stewart
and Andy Conley completing the top five.

Young Drivers Becoming the "Norm" at Eldora Speedway
ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 8) -- Young drivers in victory lane seems to be coming
the norm at Eldora Speedway, and the trend continued Friday night as leg
number two of the Historical Big One found Jason Meyers and Jeep VanWormer
celebrating their World of Outlaw (WoO) Sprint and Sunoco American Late
Model Series (ALMS) feature wins, respectively.
Competitive competition reigned supreme throughout the night and both
main events went right down to the wire, keeping the large crowd in suspense.
One of the youngest drivers in the field, Ryan Coniam shocked everyone
with his convincing victory in Dash number 1 to start on the pole of the
30-lap WoO finale. And, to prove that his run was no fluke, the second
generation Canadian driver dashed ahead of Stevie Smith when the green
flag flew, and kept his mount out in front for seven tours of the one-half
mile clay oval, before eventually giving way to Smith.
One lap later, Donny Schatz was able to get by Coniam as well, but Schatz’s
run came to an abrupt halt on lap twelve when he suddenly lost power coming
off the fourth turn. The field scrambled to miss the ailing Schatz, as
the yellow caution flag appeared and the field was re-aligned.
Just prior to that, Coniam had lost his momentum, allowing Meyers, Sammy
Swindell and Jac Haudenschild to get by him.
One more lap was completed under the green flag before Kenny Jacobs’
machine exploded going into turn number one, ending his night of action.
As the roar of the engines again filled the air, Smith started where
he left off, and opened a sizeable gap over the remainder of the pack,
while Meyers, Swindell and Haudenschild waged their own battle.. Haudenschild
was the first to gain ground, as he motored past Swindell at the half-way
point of the event; about the same time that Steve Kinser got by Coniam
to take over fifth spot.
Every indication was brewing that the fans were in for a whale of a battle,
and they certainly weren’t disappointed.
Meyers finally zeroed in on Smith by lap 20 and within two circuits reeled
him in to take over the lead, with nine laps remaining.
Two more laps flew by and Haudenschild executed a wild pass of Smith
to inherit the runner-up honors; only to have his momentum stalled by
a yellow flag that flew for a stopped Paul McMahan. By now, Kinser had
inched his way to third.
The final seven laps went caution-free and Meyers withstood a last lap
challenge from Haudenschild to take home his first-ever Eldora victory.
Haudenschild had lived up to his adopted nickname as ‘the Wild Child’
throughout the final stages of the event, as he ricocheted off the wall
several times in his desperate charge.
Kinser finished in third, with Smith and Swindell completing the top
five.
No sooner had that celebration ended than another one began to brew.
When the twenty-two qualified cars took the green flag for their 25-lap
main event, they had no idea of the work that lay ahead of them. For the
fourth time this season, their feature went caution-free.
Shane Yoder was the initial leader, as he outblasted Jerry Rice through
turns one and two. Rice remained undaunted and two laps later, looked
as if he were shot out of a cannon to get by Yoder for the lead.
Unable to keep up with Rice’s torrid pace, Yoder had his hands
full trying to stave off four-time ALMS champion, Kris Patterson and Shawn
Negangaard
But, deep in the pack, a strong drive by VanWormer was beginning to gain
everyone’s attention. Having started in 18th spot, VanWormer was
up to 7th by lap six.
Patterson slipped by Yoder on lap nine, with Brian Ruhlman joining the
mix to run fourth. By this time, VanWormer was up to fifth.
With the showing of the half-way signal, Rice began to approach lapped
traffic and his pace was slowed - allowing the balance of the field to
move in and mount their own challenge.
With five laps to go, Rice, Patterson and Ruhlman were virtually three
wide in their battle for supremacy, with VanWormer joining the fray on
the next lap, to set up a wild, four-car scramble.
VanWormer got by Ruhlman with three laps to go and one lap later disposed
of Patterson to set the crowd into a frenzy for two-laps.
As the white flag was dropped, VanWormer muscled his way into the lead
and held on to win his first-ever Late Model main event at Eldora. A disappointed
Rice hung on for second, with Patterson, Ruhlman and Negangaard completing
the top five.

ALMS sets up Ohio doubleheader
ROSSBURG, OH (August 2) -- With Friday’s rain out at Michigan’s
Hartford Speedway Park, the Sunoco sponsored American Late Model Series
(ALMS) returns to Ohio this Friday night (August 8) at the track that has
hosted more ALMS events that anyone else - Eldora Speedway. From there,
the series continues this next night (August 9) to Oakshade Raceway, for
an all-Ohio weekend doubleheader.
Of the 146 ALMS races contested since its inception in 1995, Eldora has
staged 35 main events with 20 different drivers tasting victory lane.
Of those 20, current points leader and four-time champion Kris Patterson
heads up the list with his five triumphs.
Patterson added to that total when the Sunoco ALMS tour opened up at
Eldora earlier this year, but the man that has one the past two August
events, John Gill, is gearing for a three-peat.
Oakshade’s confines are familiar to Patterson as well, and he is
looking forward to Saturday’s chase in an effort to pad his points
lead.
A total of 23 ALMS points races have been run at Oakshade, with Patterson
ruling supreme at 8 of those.
Each night will see a $2,000 paycheck up for grabs for the winner of
the main event, with the current 2003 United Midwestern Promoters (UMP)
dirt Late Model specifications enforced.
1. Kris Patterson 552
2. Brian Ruhlman 487
3. Jerry Bowersock 486
4. Hillard Miller 450
5. Wayne Maffett, Jr. 442
6. Duane Chamberlain 436
7. Aaron Scott 345
8. Jeep VanWormer 332

ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 30) -- The wait is over. Eldora Speedway promoter Earl
Baltes has released the much anticipated entry list for the most challenging
promotion he has designed in his 50 years of ruling over America’s
most visible speed plant - the Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora.
With special event sanctioning by the United States Auto Club (USAC),
the September 19 and 20 contest will see $1,000,000 in prize money up
for grabs for non-winged Sprint Cars, and 150 car owners have accepted
the challenge.
When the unprecedented event was announced, Baltes indicated that the
number of entries would be limited and immediately the naysayers doubted
that any action to limit entries would be necessary. Now, the last laugh
seems to be on them, as the unique and challenging race format for the
Mopar Million was set up for 150 cars, and that number has been fulfilled.
A quick glance at the drivers entered by the car owners reveals entrants
from nearly every sanctioning body across the Nation, with an extraordinary
array of talent and an age difference from Kenny Carmichael, Jr. who will
turn 18 in August through Al Thomas who continues to manhandle the non-winged
machines at 68 years of age.
As expected the traditional non-winged chauffeurs head up the list, while
many drivers, noted for their winged Sprint Car expertise, have answered
the call and will shed their top air-foils at a chance for the $200,000
top prize. Along with that figure, the largest payout in Sprint Car history
finds a luring $10,000 paycheck just to start the 40-lap main event.
But, is this entry list final?
Yes - and no, according to Baltes. The number of 150 is final and the
entered cars won’t change, but driver assignments could. The owners
have until the actual day of registration to announce their definitive
driver selection, knowing that back-up cars are not permitted, and that
the strict rules call for one-car/one-driver.
What this means is, once the team passes inspection and the owner/driver
combination is announced, there are no changes past that point - even
in the event of mechanical woes, crashes, etc.
One can only expect that the 150 entered car owners have some monumental
decisions to make - keep their original choice or make a change and accept
the desires of many of the drivers that missed the cutoff and want to
participate in the biggest and richest payoff in Sprint Car history.
The chess game has officially begun and in less than eight weeks, the
final playing board will be set.

HBO Keeps Eldora Busy
ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 27) -- Although Eldora Speedway has been idle for
two weeks, that inactivity will be corrected with a busy three-day slate
featuring five divisions and as many sanctioning bodies during its annual
Historical Big One festivities over the weekend of August 7 - 9.
While Sprint Cars will be featured each night, the Modified (United Midwestern
Promoters) and Stock Car classes will complete the menu on Thursday night,
the Late Models (American Late Model Series) on Friday night and the 360
Sprints (National Racing Alliance) on Saturday. Members of the Vintage
Auto Racing Club (VARC) will be on hand each night, with a special on-track
display Friday night.
Thursday’s action will mark the second Eldora appearance of the
season for the All Star Circuit of Champions as they sanction the kick-off
for Sprints. Current All Star point leader and defending Eldora Sprint
champion Chad Kemenah captured last month’s All Star invasion and
hopes to put a disappointing Kings Royal performance behind him to double
up victories.
On Friday, the World of Outlaws (WoO) will sanction the Sprint action
for the final time this year. Multi-time champion Steve Kinser has dominated
the WoO competition at Eldora this year, with four victories in five visits.
Only Kinser’s chief nemesis, Sammy Swindell, has been able to keep
him from victory lane.
Saturday’s wrap-up (Historical Big One, HBO) will be highlighted
by a whopping $100,000 payoff for the Sprint winner. As in the previous
ten years, the HBO will carry no sanction, but the hefty payoff assures
a quality field of entrants from the various sanctioning groups.
Eldora’s competitive HBO format has produced nine different winners
since its inception, with only Kinser able to duplicate wins. Donny Schatz
is the defending champion.

Steve Kinser - Unstoppable at Eldora
by Richard Day
ROSSBURG, OH (July 19) -- When he’s on a hot streak, there’s
no stopping Steve Kinser, the venerable king of winged Sprint Car racing,
and that was ever-so apparent Saturday night at Eldora Speedway After
showing some concern on how his engine performed during Friday’s
Knight Before the Kings Royal Speedway, those fears were eased when he
powered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to his fifth $50,000 Kings Royal payday,
when the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series returned to “The
World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Mike Brecht dominated the National
Racing Alliance (NRA) Sprint Invaders non-stop main event to take home
that victory.
Kinser, who also won Kings Royal races in 1984, 1988, 1991 and 1997,
took the lead from one of his former crew members, Jason Johnson, late
in the fifth lap and held off Greg Hodnett for his 16th “A”
Feature victory of the season.
“I saw the rubber coming off turn two in the 360 race, and I really
wanted to put a little harder tire on,” Kinser said in victory lane.
“But (crew chief) Scott (Gerkin) said nobody else was going with
a harder tire except Jason Johnson, so we stuck with our original game
plan. I was plenty concerned about it though. I thought there might be
enough left up top that I could get out there and get the lead, and then
get back down into the rubber, and that’s what we were able to do.
I knew there late in the race that we were going to be pretty close on
the tire, but we had enough to get the job done. I really didn’t
think anyone could get by me once the rubber was down, and I didn’t
even want to run up on any lapped cars. I just tried to keep a distance
back and not get into any problems there.”
Kinser only experienced problems early in the opening lap of Saturday’s
Third Heat Race. He hit the retaining wall in turn two, spun on the back
straightaway, and was forced to restart at the rear of the field. “The
King of the Outlaws” raced past seven cars to claim one of the four
transfer positions in the 10-lap race. Kinser earned the right to start
the main event inside the second row by following Johnson across the finish
line in the First Dash Race.
Johnson won a front-straightaway drag race with Second Dash Race winner
Stevie Smith as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. Donny
Schatz, who started outside the third row, raced past Hodnett, Tim Shaffer
and Kinser during the first half of the opening lap.
Mark Kinser, who started outside the sixth row, drove father Karl’s
#5M Sabko Maxim past Shaffer for fifth place with an inside move between
turns one and two the next time around. Jac Haudenschild spun on the back
straightaway midway through the third lap.
“The King of the Outlaws” took advantage of the early caution,
passing Schatz and Smith deep in the second corner as the green flag replaced
the yellow. Kinser continued his run to the front two laps later, riding
the rim around Johnson in turn four. The defending and 17-time O’Reilly
World of Outlaws Series champion was 15 car-lengths ahead of Johnson when
he entered lapped traffic during lap eight.
Hodnett, the 1993 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, challenged Johnson
for five laps before passing him for the runner-up spot high in the fourth
corner. O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski
slowed in turn three with a flat right rear tire early in lap 14. Lasoski’s
crew replaced his flat tire, but mechanical problems forced the #20 J.D.
Byrider Eagle into the pits soon thereafter.
Mark Kinser passed Johnson for third place with an inside move in turn
one early in the 16th lap. Schatz steered his #15 Parker Stores J&J
deep in the second corner to pass Tyler Walker for sixth one lap later.
Jim Nier’s collision with Jason Meyers late in lap 17 broke the
steering on his #00 sprinter and caused him to hit the retaining wall
in turn one the next time around.
Walker chased Smith for four laps after the race resumed, then passed
him for sixth place with an inside move between the first and second corners
midway through the race.
“The Wild Child” collided with Meyers, hit the wall and flipped
in turn three late in the 30th lap, bringing out the red flag and setting
up a 10-lap dash to the checkered flag. Schatz, Walker, Todd Kane, Kenny
Jacobs, Randy Hannagan, Meyers, Sammy Swindell and Jason Sides surrendered
their positions to replace their right rear tires and restarted at the
rear of the field.
“The King of the Outlaws” controlled the final restart and
took the checkered flag as Hodnett raced into the third corner. Mark Kinser’s
right rear tire lost air pressure in the third corner, allowing Johnson,
Smith and Shaffer to pass him before he coasted across the finish line.
Sides and Hannagan started on the 12th row and raced past 11 cars to
finish 12th and 13th, respectively.
Tim Allison led for one lap in the NRA finale, but after that, the show
belonged to Brecht, as his mount was prepared to near perfection and he
drove flawlessly.
Friday night’s winner, Darren Long, joined the action by lap three,
after he disposed of Dwain Leiber to nail down third position, behind
Brecht and Allison. However, Brecht was in a time zone all his own.
Brecht, the defending 360 Sprint champion at Eldora, began using lapped
traffic to his advantage by lap eight.
Behind him, Allison and Long were starting to get pressure from current
NRA point leader Dwain Leiber, but the quick pace of the event found that
foursome crossing the line with no further changes after 20 laps. Shane
Stewart began showing some aggression during the late stages of the affair
and appeared to have found a quick groove, but time was against him and
he had to settle for rounding out the top five.
Brecht’s victory was especially satisfying, after losing Friday
night’s lead due to a flat tire and an early departure to the pit
area.

Friday - July 18, 2003
ROSSBURG, OH (July 18) – Steve Kinser inherited the lead after
O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski crashed,
and held off Sammy Swindell to win the Knight Before the Kings Royal event
Friday at Eldora Speedway. Darren Long took advantage of Mike Brecht’s
misfortune to capture the National Racing Alliance (NRA) Sprint Invader
main event in the all-sprint doubleheader.
It marked the third time in three races “The King of the Outlaws”
has crossed the finish line first at “The World’s Fastest
Half-Mile” during the series’ 25th Anniversary Season. Kinser
was disqualified for violating the weight rule April 19th. Ironically,
Swindell – who received the victory following that “A”
Feature – lost the runner-up spot for the same infraction Friday.
The $10,000 victory, Kinser’s 15th in a main event this year, pushed
him to within 20 points of Lasoski in their battle for first place in
the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series standings.
“The motor really wouldn’t run all night,” Kinser said
after his 28th O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series “A”
Feature victory at Eldora. “The car handled great, but I expected
to see someone coming up beside me. It wouldn’t take off on the
starts, and it would take us about a lap to get up to speed, and then
it would go flat again. Danny pretty much motored away from us there at
the start, but we were set up for the end when everyone gets loose. I
was locked down, but we need to be better than this if we’re going
to do anything tomorrow night. We’re just taking it one race at
a time, but right now I’m just worried about getting this thing
to run tomorrow.”
Kinser, who entered Saturday’s 20th Annual Kings Royal with four
$50,000 victories, was the 11th-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field.
He earned the privilege of starting the 30-lap “A” Feature
outside the front row by winning his 20th Dash Race of the season.
Lasoski was enjoying the best run of his career at Eldora when the #20
J.D. Byrider Eagle jumped the cushion and hit the wall in the fourth corner
late in the 12th lap. He paced the qualifying session and won the First
Dash Race from outside the second row.
“The Dude” burst into the lead as the green flag fell in
the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 40th event of the year.
Tyler Walker and Jason Meyers exchanged fourth place three times during
the first three laps, before defending Kings Royal champion Joey Saldana
took the inside line in turn one to pass Meyers for fifth place early
in the fourth lap.
The leaders were approaching lapped traffic the next time around when
Ben Rutan stopped in the second corner with mechanical problems. Swindell
and Walker took turns passing each other for third place during the lap
following the restart.
Jim Nier, who will promote the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’
inaugural race at K-C Raceway July 31st, slowed on the front straightaway
when his car suffered a broken rear end late in the seventh lap. Jac Haudenshild,
making his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series debut in the #4 Race
to Hawaii Maxim, collided with Nier and collected Johnny Herrera and Kenny
Jacobs. None of the drivers were injured in the crash, but their cars
were unable to restart the race.
Lasoski controlled the ensuing restart, and was a straightaway ahead
of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic four laps later. “The Dude”
lost the lead one lap later, however, when he crashed into the retaining
wall. Kinser’s #11 Quaker State Maxim led the sprinters to the starting
line as the race resumed.
Donny Schatz, who started outside the seventh row, exchanged seventh
place with Daryn Pittman during the 13th and 14th laps. Pittman took the
inside line through the fourth corner to pass Schatz, but the 1997 Kevin
Gobrecht Rookie of the Year regained the position with a high move through
turns one and two.
Kinser entered lapped traffic with a 12-car-length advantage over Swindell
midway through lap 18. “B” Feature winner Kevin Huntley took
the leaders out of lapped traffic half a lap later when he crashed into
the turn-four retaining wall, however.
Shane Stewart and Meyers took turns passing each other for fifth place
during the 19th lap. Schatz drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past Stewart
between the first and second corners for sixth place late in lap 21. Stewart
lost three positions when he hit the retaining wall in turn two the next
time around.
“The King of the Outlaws” was 15 car-lengths ahead of Swindell
when he caught the back-markers with six laps remaining, and took the
checkered flag with 10 car-lengths to spare.
Walker received credit for second place after Swindell was disqualified.
Saldana finished third, ahead of Meyers, Schatz, Pittman, 16th-starting
Mark Kinser, Stewart, 19th-starting Tim Shaffer and Stevie Smith.
Brecht appeared to have things in control in the early stages of the
NRA nightcapper, despite several yellow and red flag delays. And each
time the green flag re-appeared, he would roll out to an impressive lead.
However, one of the final yellow flags proved to be the most devastating
for Brecht, as he appeared for himself after he tagged the back stretch
wall and was towed to the pit area with a flat tire. He was unable to
get the tire changed prior to the reappearance of the green flag and he
was credited with a disappointing 15th place finish.
Long received the inheritance of Brecht’s misfortune and was able
to hold back the challenges of Steve Leiber, Tim Sites, Dwain Leiber and
defending series champion Mike Dussell to record the victory.

Birkhofer Dominates Eldora
ROSSBURG, OH (July 12) -- Brian Birkhofer was the teacher Saturday night
at Eldora Speedway and he had a stellar field of students on hand to watch
his demonstration of domination as the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP)
Late Model Summernationals made their first ever appearance to the one-half
mile clay oval. The popular Muscatine, Iowa driver out drove a stout 49-car
field of heavy-hitters to win the 30-lap finale and the accompanying $10,000
paycheck.
Completing the busy night of competition were the Modified and Stock
Car classes with Brian Ruhlman and Mike Dirksen capturing their respective
main events.
Birkhofer, the defending champion of Eldora’s famed World 100,
wasted little time to move ahead of the class and take charge.
After disposing of early race leader Shane Clanton on lap six, Birkhofer
began his driving clinic. Even with the talent-laden field on hand, there
was no one that anything for Birkhofer.
Clanton stayed as close as he could in the runner-up spot for another
three circuits of the high-banked oval before giving way to Billy Moyer,
with Terry English and Darrell Lanigan waging their own battle not too
far behind.
Once clear of Clanton, it was thought that Moyer would reel in Birkhofer,
but with the affair going caution-free, Birkhofer was not to be denied,
as he drove high and low around the oval, using the lapped cars as a cushion
to separate himself from the balance of the field.
Clanton began to drop off the pace ever so slightly, allowed both English
and Lanigan to move forward, but after that, the running order up front
never changed.
Birkhofer crossed the line nearly a full straightaway ahead of Moyer,
with English, Lanigan and Clanton completing the top five.
Ruhlman has become the class of the Modified field and outdistanced Gary
Richard into the first turn of the first lap, and from that point on,
the battle was for positions behind him.
Scott Orr, a multi-time champion in the Modified ranks, appeared up to
the task after getting by Richard on lap three, but that was as far as
his forward motion would go.
Time was not in Orr’s favor, as Ruhlman took the win by over ten
car lengths. Richard was able to hang on to third, after holding back
the challenge of the Chinn cousins, Brett in fourth and Wayne in fifth.
Dirksen turned in his strongest drive of the season to capture his Stock
Car triumph. Equally impressive was John Phlipot, Jr., who, after winning
his heat race, came on strong and smooth in the finale to record his highest
finish ever with runner-up honors. Behind that duo was Tom Wiedman in
third, Rick VanCamp in fourth and Earnie Woodard in fifth.

Kings Royal at Eldora
ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 7) -- Without a doubt, Steve Kinser is one of the most
skilled and consistent drivers in modern Sprint Car history, and his record
at Eldora Speedway’s famed Kings Royal is only one element towards
that evidence.
As the $50,000 to win event enters its 20th go-around over the weekend
of July 18 & 19, statistics show that Kinser is the only driver to
have competed in every Kings Royal since its inception in 1984. Four victories
(1984, 1988, 1991 and 1997) are included in that total In fact, only five
times has the Bloomington, Indiana native finished out of the top seven.
Those numbers are certainly impressive, but when it comes to race day,
those statistics go out the window as old news and Kinser attacks the
current deed at hand with the aggression that has become his trademark.
And that could spell trouble for the drivers attempting to etch their
name into Eldora’s record books and earn a trip to the famed throne
that signifies a Kings Royal victory.
A total of 124 drivers have earned their way into the starting line-up
over the years, and eleven drivers have worn the crown. Kinser’s
four wins leads the way, while local favorite Jac Haudenschild has been
crowned three times (1987, 1994, 1998). Double wins have been earned by
Doug Wolfgang (1985, 1990), Sammy Swindell (1992, 1999) and Dave Blaney
(1993, 1995), while single Kings Royal winners include Don Krietz, Jr.
(1986), Bobby Davis, Jr. (1989), Johnny Herrera (1996), Dale Blaney (2000),
Mark Kinser (2001) and the most recent King, Joey Saldana (2002).
The trend of three first-time winners in as many years is something that
many drivers would like to see continue this year.
Two nights of complete racing programs mark the Kings Royal weekend and
both carry full sanction by the World of Outlaws (WoO). Friday night’s
(dubbed The Knight Before the Kings Royal) payoff includes a $10,000 to
win main event while the actual Kings Royal on Saturday, July 19, carries
prize money in excess of $120,000, including a hefty $50,000 pay check
for the newly crowned King.
Tickets and reserved seats for the event remain available and may be
purchased by calling the track office at 937.338.3815 during normal business
hours. Drivers interested in entering the event are encouraged to call
that same number.
Kemenah Beats Eldora Rains for All Star Win
ROSSBURG, OH (June 28) -- A two hour rain delay only made a fast track faster
Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, as the southwestern Ohio speed plant
celebrated its 49th anniversary with Chad Kemenah capturing the All Star
Sprint main event. Brian Ruhlman turned the trick in the Modified finale,
while the crash-marred Stock Car A-Main found Bob Burch in victory lane.
Just as the 33 Sprints on hand were set to take to the one-half mile
clay oval for their practice sessions, Mother Nature let loose with nearly
a quarter-inch of rain. Some 45 minutes later, the moisture subsided and
the process of preparing the track for racing conditions began.
The end result was a lightning fast, super smooth course.
And that fell into the hands of Kemenah.
Although his trail to the victory celebration was not an easy one. After
setting second quick time for the evening, Kemenah, the current All Star
point leader, failed to advance through his heat race. That placed him
into the B-Main, which he handily won.
That may have been a blessing, as the quick ten-lap run, gave him one
final look at the track conditions facing him in the 30-lap main event
that was to follow.
At the dropping of the green flag, Craig Keel jumped into the early lead,
with Mike Wagner, Jeff Shepard and Kemenah in pursuit.
Wagner, turning in his best-ever Eldora performance, was a sight to behold.
Riding the wall, Wagner shot past Keel on lap three and instantly opened
a comfortable margin over the field. At the same time, Kemenah was on
a roll, and advanced to second, behind Wagner by lap five.
Kemenah moved in on Wagner three laps later, and the duo staged a wild
dogfight that ended with Kemenah taking the lead on lap ten.
Four laps later, while in heavy lapped traffic, the race was stopped
when Keith Baxter flipped wildly down the back chute. The car was damaged
beyond repair; however, Baxter escaped injury.
Once back underway, it was still the Kemenah/Wagner show up front, while
Shepard had his hands full holding off Jason Johnson and Jimmy Stinson
for third.
Two laps passed before the caution appeared for Greg Wilson, who lost
a right front tire and wheel assembly.
The final caution flew five laps from the finish when Dwain Leiber coasted
to a stop on the back chute.
Wagner gave it everything he had in an attempt to wheel in Kemenah, but
there was no denying the Findlay, Ohio chauffeur of his third All Star
victory at Eldora.
A jubilant Wagner crossed the line second, followed in order by Shepard,
Johnson and Stinson.
Brian Ruhlman had little trouble taking home his third Modified victory
of the year; although multi-time track champion Scott Orr tried in vain
to stop Ruhlman’s win streak.
A pair of caution flags slowed the pace during the 15-lap run, and on
each restart, Orr would attempt to overcome Ruhlman, but fell short at
the finish, as the potent duo finished 1-2.
Aaron Jenkins crossed the line in third, with Rob Williams and Gary Richard
rounding out the top five.
Burch and Doug Matheny took turns swapping the lead up front during the
Stock finale, but behind them, the action was hot and heavy.
One of the wildest Stock Car accidents in recent history stopped the
race on lap four, when both Kevin Gossard and Bob Kaffenberger flipped
down the back stretch. A total of seven cars were collected in the incident,
that found plenty of damaged machinery, but fortunately, no injuries.
Burch won the battle up front to finish ahead of Matheny, John Brooks,
Gabe Wombolt and Earnie Woodard.
