Witham, Dickson & Fordyce get first Skyline win of 2003. Francis and Rizer
are repeat winers

Ralph Witham, Mark Dickson and Toad Fordyce all picked up popular first
Skyline feature wins of the 2003 season at the Skyline Speedway Friday
night.

Athens Ohio's Witham dominated the Late Model main in the caution free 25
lap race.
Starting on the pole, Witham beat Mike McDaniel to the point in the opening
lap's race down backstretch, and quickly put time & space between himself
and the rest of the field, eventually lapping up to the 7th place finisher.
Meanwhile McDaniel kept Andy Bond and Jason Montgomery at bay for the 2nd
position, using savvy driving, the track's cushion, and later in the race,
lapped cars as "rolling picks".
As the "5 laps to go" signal was given Witham was long gone, but the battle
for positions 2-6 was far from determined. Todd Smith worked the low line,
and took the runner-up position on lap 23.
Montgomery followed Smith through the breach to nip McDaniel for third.
17th starting Freddy Carpenter charged to fifth by passing Andy Bond on the
final lap.
In the post race interview, a jubilant Witham climbed out of the 'Landot
Used Cars/Southeast Imports/Boss Chassis' sponsored #1, thanking car builder
Toma Johnson who was present and stated he was glad to shake the monkey of
his back that had plagued him early in the season.

The AMRA modified 20 lap feature was a nail biter that was slowed only once
for a first lap caution.
Gallipolis, Ohio's Mark Dickson powered into the lead at lap 2 from his
third starting position with fifth starting John Burdette in hot pursuit.
This duo "officially" swapped the lead 4 times, but the on track lead
changed hands at least twice every lap between the 7th and 17th lap.
While all in attendance were glued to the lead battle, Larry Bond wrestled
the third position from Roy Roush on lap 12, changed his line, and began to
reel in the leaders.
Dickson retook the lead for the final time on lap 16, as Bond soon after
joined the 3 car battle.
As the trio raced 3 wide, Dickson stretched his slim advantage, and Bond's
last lap pass earned the runner-up finish ahead of Burdette, Roush, and 5th
place Danny Talbott.
A happy Dickson credited his crew & family for the win in the post race
interview, and expressed his pleasure with the 'P&N Trucking/Boley
Enterprise/Integra Fabrication"Wizard" Chassis' #0.

Mineral Well's WV native Toad Fordyce's string of bad luck came to an end in
the street stock feature, as Fordyce took to the high groove and grabbed the
lead on lap 3 of the 15 lap event.
A pair of mid-race cautions was the closest the field could get to Fordyce,
as his 'Conner Cleaning Service/Canapari Race Cars' #04 beat Mike Martin,
Jeremy Blake, Dusty Boley and Frank Roush to the checkered.
In his victory lane interview, Fordyce credited brother Bill for a pre-race
chassis change that made the winning difference.

Parkersburg, WV's Eric Francis has been a stellar performer in pure stock
division, and Friday nights performance didn't disappoint as Francis led
green to checkered in the 12 lap main.
Francis earned his pole starting position by coming from last starting
position to win the first heat.
A trio of Hall's chased Francis's 'Mikes Auto Body' #5f Monte Carlo to the
stripe, as Frankie, Harley and Joe Hall finished ahead of Tom Murphy, who
rounded out the top five finishers.

Pomeroy Ohio's James Rizer successfully debuted a new car in leading all 12
laps of the front wheel drive 4 cylinder feature. Following Rizer's '8-up'
were Ryan Adkins, Tyler Carpenter, Chris Carpenter and Kelly Temple.

***** Racing resumes this Friday night at the Skyline Speedway with racing
in all 5 divisions. Gates open at 5 pm, with hotlaps slated for 7
pm.*********

Conley's Disappointed at Thunder Ridge Finishes, Look Forward to Skyline, K-C

(Wheelersburg, OH) All three Conley Motorsports, Inc. drivers were on hand at the Thunder Ridge Racing and Entertainment Complex in Prestonsburg, KY for this past weekend’s $5,000 to win MACS sanctioned event. R.J. and Delmas Conley were both scheduled to race at Portsmouth (OH) Speedway, but headed south due to persistent storms in the Portsmouth, OH area.

All three Conley’s were a threat to be dealt with, as Rod, R.J. and Delmas all spent time in the Top Five during the feature event. Delmas started on the outside pole and led the majority of the early laps in the event until he made contact with his son Rod, who had just brought out a caution for a flat tire. Delmas stayed on the track for a few laps, but with heavy damage. He ended up with a disappointing 15th place finish.

Rod fixed his flat tire and the left rear quarter panel damage sustained in the incident with his dad and went on to finish a solid 4th place in the event. This was “Hot Rod’s” third straight Top Five finish. R.J., who timed in second fastest, was as high as fourth in the event, but pulled off late in the race and settle for a 10th place finish.

“All three of our cars were fast,” said R.J. from the Conley Trucking shop on Monday. “Dad had the car to beat, but never saw Rod until it was to late. It was a very disappointing night because I think that we all had Top Five cars, but it just didn’t work out that way.”

The Conley’s will be back at it again this weekend, as all three will compete in the $3,000 to win show at Skyline Speedway in Stewart, OH. The following night, Delmas and his two sons will travel to K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, OH for a $7,000 to win Renegade DirtCar Series event. For information on the Skyline event, log on to www.skylinespeedway.com and for information regarding the event at K-C, visit the Renegade website at www.renegadedirtcar.com. You can find the latest in news and information on all three of the Conley’s at their home on the web located at www.conleymotorsportsinc.com.

STARS Of Ohio Set To Shine At Skyline Speedway
By: Dustin Jarrett, STARS of Ohio PR

Stewart, OH -- If you're in Ohio on Friday, May 16th, you won't need to look to the sky to see the stars. Instead, the "STARS" will be on the race track at the 3/8-mile Stewart, Ohio oval known as the Skyline Speedway.

Citing the rapidly growing popularity of the STARS Battle of the Bluegrass (BoB) Series, STARS owner and founder Carl Short is looking into the possibility of starting a STARS touring series in the state of Ohio. Short will use the STARS name at the $3000 to win, $300 to start Late Model race at Skyline Speedway on Friday, May 16th to see what kind of interest is shown from both the fans and the drivers.

"The concept behind this race is the same as the STARS BoB Series which has been so successful in Kentucky," Short stated. "We think this same concept is something that is much needed in the state of Ohio. Racing fans in Ohio know that their drivers are some of the best in the country and we'd like to give them an opportunity to shine."

If the May 16th race at Skyline generates enough interest from both the fans and drivers, Short is planning to "officially" start a STARS of Ohio tour in 2004.

"There are so many great racers in and around the Buckeye State that have the skills to run with some of the biggest names in the country but, due to money, time, and/or work restraints, these drivers simply cannot afford to travel very far," Short said. "In addition, many race tracks do not have the ability to hold enough fans to pay the purse and high sanctioning fees of a national series. The STARS of Ohio is just what the local racer needs."

Short continued by saying, "The racers will have a series they can follow that doesn't involve a lot of travel, yet pays better than a regular weekly show. Additionally, these races will be events that fans will want to attend because it will bring some of the best talent from the area together on one race track, not to mention the possibility of a few nationally known drivers showing up at any given time."

Lou and Roxanne Hubbard's Skyline Speedway will be the "test run" for the STARS of Ohio. The race will pay $3000 to win and $300 to start. "We're extremely excited about having Carl here for this race," Lou Hubbard said, "and we certainly believe this race can generate enough interest to allow this thing to go into full swing next year."

Over the course of the last 16 months, the Hubbard's have quickly turned Skyline Speedway into one of the premier Friday night tracks in Ohio. During the off-season, a new concrete wall has been installed on the front stretch replacing the old guardrail, and new restrooms can be found in the pit area as well as the general admission section.

"The Hubbard's are rapidly turning Skyline into a real showplace," Short stated, "and we know the drivers can expect a great surface to race on and the fans can expect to see a well-groomed facility and an outstanding show. Most of the big names from the Mid-Ohio Valley are expected to be on hand as well as some other drivers with a more regional and possibly national 'ring' to them."

Mike Balzano won the first two races of the 2003 season at Skyline Speedway while Steve Lucas picked up the win in the third event, the Topless 50.

Once again, this star-studded spectacular takes place Friday, May 16th at the Skyline Speedway. Skyline Speedway is located east of Athens, Ohio -- 4.4 miles off US Route 50 on County Road 53.
