Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 Finale

Eva, Alabama’s Jon Miller and Fayetteville, Tennessee’s Edwin Taylor became the fifty second and fifty third different winners at Winchester Speedway Saturday night although it took nearly ninety minutes after the feature before Miller received his laurels.

The Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury and Clayton Homes of Shelbyville sponsored Big 10 series finale was run Saturday at Winchester after an August 2nd rain out and 36 Late Models signed in(Troy Lamb, withdrew) to vie for honors. Thirty four Late Models went against the clock and when all was said and done it was Randy Gifford that sat atop the totem pole with a 16.05 time. Former Big 10 winner David Brannon was second with a 16.15 clocking that edged Shannon Davis and his 16.20 mark.

The 35 lap feature was a barnburner that ran 24 laps before the first caution waived for third place runner Brannon. For the first 24 laps the point was hotly contested with Gifford, Davis, Brannon, Jerry Ashley, Jimmy Nowlin, Jon Miller and point’s leader Jerry Owens going three wide at times and deftly working traffic. Lap 25 saw Brannon restart in the rear and the final 11 circuits continued the tussle up front. Point’s runner-up Jon Miller was riding the cushion and moving towards the front as was Owens. In the waning laps Miller got on the outside of Randy Gifford a couple of times but each time Gifford shut the door.

When the checkered flag waived the running order was: Gifford, Jon Miller, Owens, middle Tennessee dirt track legend Jimmy Nowlin and 2003 Arnold’s Body Shop Late Model Track Champion Jerry Ashley in the Top 5. Former champion Shannon Davis was sixth, holding off Chattanooga’s James Gamble, who was superb in his first run at Winchester.

Some 90 minutes later Gifford would forfeit the victory on a rules infraction and Jon Miller would be declared the Big 10 feature winner.

Sixteen year old Dallas Cooper and Daniel Miller would win the two last chance races and Miller along with Tommy Davis were the hard chargers of the night with both coming from deep(eighteenth and twentieth respectively) in the field to finish eighth and ninth. Only two racers failed to finish the 35 lap main event.

The final “Big 10” Point fund paid out some $14,240 with Champion Jerry Owens receiving over $2,835 and fifteenth place Josh Lunsford garnering over $425.

As the trio exited turn four, with the checkered flag waiving, points champion Brian Hudson was on the bottom with Ronnie Morrison on the top and Jonathon Sells in the middle. All three made contact as they crossed the finish line and Hudson was third by a foot over Morrison and Sells. Winchester(TN) Speedway, September 6 Season Championship Results

The Arnold’s’ Body Shop Late Models saw Jerry Owens set fast time with a 15.57 clocking then have to withstand the challenges of Jerry Ashley , David Brannon and finally a late charge from Randy Gifford to pick up his sixth win of 2003.

Two time winner Gifford went to the high side with some seven laps remaining and picked off Ashley and Brannon then forced Owens to take defensive action over the final two laps to preserve the win. Jerry Ashley’s third place finish allowed Jerry to win another track championship over Brannon and Ronnie Caldwell. Brannon settled for fourth while Shelbyville’s Tommy Davis came from row six to finish fifth.

Rick Currin set fast time in the Valley Mini Storage - Tropical Tan 2-BBL Late Model division (15.95) and led the first half of the season championship feature before Randy Judge and Ken McAfee both slipped by. The next six laps were worth the price of admission alone as McAfee and Judge ran side by side with Randy on the top and Ken on the bottom. A real thriller with the lead changing hands officially on 5 of the next six laps and unofficially at every turn. McAfee finally nosed in front and held on to win feature number seven and also the 2003 track championship. Currin was third with Bruce Williams and Jeff Echols taking the fourth and fifth positions.

The mid season lull is certainly over for Jeff Frame as Jeff became a six time feature winner by taking the Hanger’s Carpet and Hardwood Flooring Super Stock Season Championship. Frame’s win doubled his win total over his nearest competitors (Jason James, Jeff Woods and David Henley all have three wins apiece). Runner-up Brian Hudson parlayed his second runner-up finish of the night into the 2003 track championship. Brian came into the night’s action five points behind Gary Tucker who has the led points race nearly all season long, and ended the night a mere seven points in front of Gary.

Jason James finished third with Josh Johnson having a fine run to take fourth place in front of Johnny Payne.

Jeff Woods and Frame were the heat race victors.

In the Make-up feature from August 30th, Johnny Payne took the measure of Hudson and Tucker to become the 52nd different winner of the current season.

The 2002 Neal’s Body Shop Outlaw Pony champion Joey Sisk made it clear that last season’s championship was no fluke as Joey won his heat race then the main event and secure the 2003 track championship by the largest margin in any class. First time visitor Jamie Lewis of Murfreesboro had a fine run to keep Sisk on his toes and finished second over Pat Williams, Bruce Fullmer and Tom Wilson.

Heat winner Tony Patterson took advantage of his friend and nemesis’s Stanley James engines woes (James was the point’s leader going into the night’s races only to have his Mustang shut off before the feature started!) to finish a close second to Burns but more importantly gather enough points to become the 2003 track champion. Leroy Norris finished third in his first Pure Stock start ahead of heat winner Nick Hicks (declared the winner after apparent winner Jeff Anderson was light at the scales) and Billy Hammonds. One final race remains. It has been an excellent series with four different winners: Jerry Owens (5 wins) Byron Michael (2 wins), David Brannon and Keith Hayes with one victory each.

85 different racers have competed in the first 9 rounds of the Big 10 series and thanks to Jim and Tim of Duck River and Timmy of Winchester for conducting this series. I hope all you fans encourage all three owners to continue this series in 2004.

Last night’s show at Duck River provided the middle Tennessee fans a chance to see a very fast Keith Hayes, a very quick 16 year old (Dallas Cooper) who can run with anyone and some tough misfortune for Tony Morris, Larry Landers, Shannon Davis, Byron Michael and David Gentry.

Good luck to all in Round #10.

Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 points leader Jerry Owens continues his dominance

Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 point’s leader Jerry Owens continued his dominance by setting fast time in time trials with a 15.09 to Tony Morris’s 15.27 and topping 31 other late models that took time trials (Tyler Landers and David Gentry did not qualify), then led all 50 laps of the main event to pick-up the $3,000 first prize. Daniel Miller slipped under Tony Morris on the final circuit to edge Tony by less than two feet for the runner-up finish. 2003 Big 6 champion and two time Big 10 winner Byron Michael came from his 16th starting spot to take fourth place from Jon Miller in the waning laps. David Seibers had an excellent run to take sixth spot from Big 10 feature winner David Brannon. Brannon transferred through one of two last chance races and started 21st. While Harrison, Tennessee’s Bobby Mayse was impressive in his first trip to Winchester starting 18th and finishing eighth. Twentieth place starter Larry DeLong was 9th with number four qualifier Corey Posey recovering from an early spin to come from the rear and take the tenth finishing position.

Pulaski’s Ken McAfee held off 16 year old Dallas Cooper to win Consy number one while Cleveland Speedway regular Bobby Mayse won Consy number two over Larry DeLong and Jeff Tate.

Jackson’s two primary challengers failed to finish as Mark Haddon crashed hard into the front stretch wall with two laps to go and Henry Hanger blew out a left front tire on the final lap while running in second place. Shane Henley had his best run of the year to take the Place position while Scott Cornelius took the Show spot. Alan Holmes came from the rear to take fourth ahead of Terry Fowler who survived an early caution to finish fifth. Jackson and Henley were the heat race victors.

The Neal’s Body Shop Outlaw Pony feature was a heartbreaker for heat winner Bruce Fullmer. Fullmer led 14 and ¾ laps but it was 6 time winner Mike Brashears who edged Fullmer by less than a fender at the checkered flag. Points leader Joey Sisk pushed the lead duo across the finish line as these three put on a brilliant battle the entire race. Pat Williams, subbing for Ricky Brown made it a four way battle the final 4 circuits to take fourth spot ahead of Tom Wilson.

As per usual, kudos goes to the Jamison Inn Mini Stockers as this group of 4-cylinder racers never fail to give the crowd their money’s worth. A pack of four to five racers battle from start to finish with last weeks winner Stanley James on the point most of the way. With three laps to go and the Mustang contingent in a wild battle for the win James was shuffled back to third at the white flag. Going into turn two hard contact occurred between Joe Burns and James with James sailing off the track and Burns front end getting airborne. Track rule call for the race to run to conclusion once the white flag has been displayed so Tony Patterson and Clyde Petty roared on down that back chute. If you blinked (and I did - watching the Burns - James altercation) you missed Patterson sailing off the track in turn three and Clyde Petty rolling under the checkered flag for win number two.

Petty, Burns, Patterson and James all deserved to win but only one can and it was Clyde tonight. Michael Brown quietly rolled home second with Earl Campbell, Edwin Taylor and Lee Farless completing the Top 5. James and Mike Norman were the heat race winners.

Race Results from Winchester (Tennessee) Speedway, August 23

The most wanted Outlaw (Pony) at Winchester Speedway still appears to be undecided as defending class champion and current points leader Joey Sisk set fast time with a 17.86 clocking (to a 17.95 for Brad Sain) but it was Sain who conquered the field in the 15 lap feature to become the first and only racer to have visited victory lane seven times in 2003. The win was a struggle as Sain and Sisk ran side by side for some 8 laps with Sisk pushing his pick-up truck in front on at least two occasions but Joey could never quite close the deal and it was Brad who finally settled the issue and the win. Mike Brashears and Ricky Brown had their own tug of war for third and that wasn’t settled until two laps remained when Mike finally took third but had no time left to go after the high flying lead duo of Sain and Sisk. Brown was fourth with To Wilson making a very strong run to grab his best finish of the season in fifth place.

Points leader Jerry Ashley set fast time with a 15.67 clocking then pretty much set sail in route to win number four of the season. The runner-up spot was in doubt until late as Big 10 winner David Brannon and Scott Cornelius waged a race long battle that went back and forth a couple of times before Brannon finally prevailed. Jimmy Tucker showed his muscle late by taking fourth in front of former winner and Duck River Speedway track champion David Thompson.

The "smart" money in Open Wheels was on Smartt Racing teammates Mark Haddon and Shannon Davis. Mark was heat two winner and also won the "Brad Seals Memorial Dash for Cash" and Shannon Davis was heat one winner and also picked up his third victory of the year after a crowd pleasing duel with Alan Holmes. The duel ended with two to go as Holmes and Davis made contact bringing out the caution that sent Holmes to the rear. A late race charge netted last week’s winner Henry Hanger a strong runner-up finish with the "Oz" Ozzie Howard that is, a close third. Terry Fowler finally shed some of his bad luck with a strong third place finish and Nathan Campbell taking fifth.

In a class that usually sees the front group finish in a tight pack of racers James put it on the field on this night. Teammate Tony Patterson settled for second with three time winner Joe Burns in third. Burns teammate Edwin Taylor was fourth in front of fifth place finisher Clyde Petty. Winchester (TN) Speedway results, August 16

Middle Tennessee stalwarts Moe Harrison, Jason Todd and Scooter Sanders all became first time winners at Winchester Speedway in 2003 on Saturday night bringing the total to 50 different drivers have made trips to victory lane during the current season.

"Slo Moe" Harrison as he is affectionately known by Tennessee race fans was anything but on Saturday night as the local legend returned to the helm of a Late Model for the first time in several years. Moe has been piloting Open Wheels of late (and has a pair of victories in that class) but climbed aboard the "Gilliam Racing" number 41 two Barrel Late Model and proved what we all knew. Moe is still "The Man" after over a quarter of a century of racing. Few would question Moe’s desire and none would question his ability as the Shelbyville chauffeur jumped out front early on in the main event then led all the way fighting back a determined Ken McAfee for the win. In fact, just past the halfway point McAfee and Harrison raced side by side with near disastrous results. On lap eleven with McAfee on the bottom and Harrison on the high side the two made hard contact going down the front chute with the entire front end being ripped from Barry Smartt Late Model of McAfee. Ken survived and continued to press Moe to the finish line but could not find a way around the flying Harrison. Third through fifth was also a hard fought battle with Bruce Williams getting quicker with each outing. Williams, Jeff Tate and Randy Judge were in a tussle that resulted in Tate and Williams crashing on the final turn some 50 yards from the checkered flag while last weeks winner Judge missed the mayhem to garner third place. Former Mini Stock racer Michael Kirby making only his third LM start finished fourth as Eddie Graves was fifth. McAfee was the heat race winner.

Henry Hanger set fast time in the Valley Mini Storage / Tropical Tan Open Wheel division with a 16.53 mark then proceeded to do what no one else could accomplish on this night. Run a way with the main event. Not only did Henry drive away from the winner of the last three features, David Jackson but the "Franklin(County) Flyer" literally obliterated the field. Lapping cars and finishing over half a lap in front of third place Landon Arnold and a full straightaway in front of points leader Jackson. Shane Scott got his best finish of 2003 by taking fourth spot in front of Nathan Campbell.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Mini Sprints made their only visit of 2003 to Winchester Speedway and it was Scooter Sanders who passed four racers on the first lap then held off a mid race charge by Randy Burke to garner his second feature in two weeks. Second place finisher Burke momentarily got around Sanders on lap nine only to surrender the lead back to the Lebanon, Tennessee campaigner on the next turn. Then Burke had his hands full with West Point, Mississippi’s Heath Brand who perhaps along with Charlotte, North Carolina’s Mike Ward and Danny Barryhill were the hard chargers of the night by passing more racers than anyone else. Brand was third with Jimmy McLain sneaking around Barryhill during the waning circuits for fourth. Ward’s great run ended with a pair of spinouts that sent the hard charger to the pits. Burke and Eric Wright were the heat race victors.

Manchester’s David Henley won his heat race then withstood a massive attack of determined Super Stockers to pick up his second feature of the season. Three time winner Jason James pushed Henley to the checkered flag with Ronnie Morrison having a great run to nab third. Last week’s winner Jeff Frame pushed the lead trio while fifth place went to Jonathan Sells who passed seven racers on his charge towards the front. The Top 5 were all clustered together at the checkered flag. Points leader Gary Tucker won his heat but an early caution sent the Fayetteville racer to the rear. If you couldn’t get excited about the Jamison Inn Mini Stock feature then check your pulse, you may not have one! Six time winner Tony Patterson and heat winner Joe Burns dueled side by side early on until contact put both into the front straightaway wall. Both recovered although Joe had to pit to affect repairs and Patterson had to fight off a pesky Clyde Petty and Joe Burns. Petty went high on the final lap in an effort to get around Patterson and when the two parted coming through turns three and four Joe Burns stuck the nose of his Mustang in the middle. As the trio raced towards the finish it was Patterson by less than a foot while Burns was between them both and alongside their doors a mere 5 feet short of victory. Winchester (TN) Speedway, August 9 Race Results

Three new feature winners (Nathan Norris, Randy Judge and Stanley James) graced the Winner’s Circle Saturday night bringing the total to 47 different racers that have been victorious at Winchester in 2003.

The Arnold’s Body Shop Late Model feature winner Randy Gifford wheeled the Billy Wayne Jones owned number 316 to his second Late Model feature win of the season and third overall feature win (Gifford is the only racer to have victories in more than one class as Randy wheeled the Smartt racing Open Wheel to victory back on Memorial Day weekend) on Saturday night. Gifford set quick time with a 16.17 clocking then topped seventeen Late Models and Big 10 feature winner David Brannon for the win. Brannon’s runner-up finish coupled with point’s leader Jerry Ashley’s fifth place finish allowed Brannon to narrow the points gap to a mere 26 points in the season long battle for the coveted crown. That changed Saturday night, as James outdueled a fourteen car mini stock field to capture the feature win by edging Joe Burns and three time winner Manual Williams. "Big 10" event at Winchester Postponed due to rain

Saturday night, August 2 was to have been Round #7 of the Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 Steel Head series and with 34 Late Models in the pit area, all Top 10 in points in attendance and the return of middle Tennessee racing legends Jimmy Nowlin and David Gentry to the Big 10 series, the fans were excited about the night's potential for some great racing.
Unfortunately, just after the invocation and National Anthem a shower began and after some 45 minutes of light but persistent rain the night's activities were postponed until September 20.

Elora, Tennessee racers make it three wins in a row Saturday night at Winchester Speedway

Elora, Tennessee racers made it three wins in a row Saturday night at Winchester Speedway. After a pair of victories by Elora's David Brannon it was former track champion and Elora native Jerry Ashley that edged five time winner Jerry Owens during time trials (15.39 to 15.40) then after an early tussle with the Big 10 points leader Owens, and a valiant effort by Jeremy Taylor, Ashley marched to his third victory of the season. Taylor made a run at Ashley but settled for the runner-up spot while Owens nailed down the third spot. After a disappointing time trial effort, Brannon rallied to slip by Randy Gifford for the fourth position.

Pulaski, Tennessee’s Ken McAfee slugged it out early on with Rick Curren then made it look easy in rolling to win number 6 in the Valley Mini Storage 2-Barrell Late model main event. Former winner Jeff Tate was second with Randy Judge surviving a mid race crash to take third. The drive of the night goes to Tim Orrell who started twelfth after struggling in his heat race but as the feature approached the midway point the Shelbyville chauffeur seemed to figure out the ¼ mile clay oval and passed eight racers in a dozen circuits to take fourth spot from Shane Echols on the final lap. McAfee and Currin were the heat race winners.

Local resident David Jackson seemed destined to be the perennial bridesmaid this season. After 13 Top five runs and numerous "close but no cigar" runner-up finishes, the former Super Stock champion won his first feature last Saturday night, July 19. Now it looks like the points leader may not lose again after besting Mr. Open Wheel, Alan Holmes and making it two victories in a row. Holmes settled for second with Jeff Ray having a fine run to take third ahead of Shannon Davis and Landon Arnold. Arnold and Jackson were the heat race victors.

In perhaps the most competitive feature of the night, Manual Williams fought off the efforts of Stanley James for over ten laps then led a pack of four cylinder mini stock racers across the finish line. It seemed that the Top 10 racers were all bunched up in some two and three wide racing throughout the field with three time winner Joe Burns getting under James in the final lap to top Stanley by a nose for second.. Tony Patterson was fourth with Joe Jernigan in fifth.

James and Williams were the heat race winners.

David Brannon Wins Late Model Race at Winchester Speedway, July 19

Randy Gifford set quick time in Late Model time trials with a 16.48 clocking which topped 14 other racers but when the green flag was unfurled to start the main event it was Big 10 winner David Brannon that jumped on top of the field. Brannon made it two wins in a row but had to hold off a determined Jerry Ashley. Points leader Ashley would settle for a runner-up finish. Scott Cornelius made his first start of the season and garnered a hard fought third place finish in front of two time winner (2-BBL Late Models) Billy Barnett and number three qualifier Jamie Louden. Cornelius, Barnett, Louden and Steve Garner (6th place finisher) put on a stirring battle that lasted most of the 25 laps and was a show in itself.

Alan Holmes, like his Fayetteville neighbor Gifford set quick time with a 17.62 mark but just as Gifford was smitten by mechanical woes in the feature, so was Holmes. The Open Wheel main event featured former Super Stock Champion David Jackson on this night. The Winchester native has more Top 5 finishes (a dozen) and more runner-up finishes than anyone in the OW class. But until Saturday night the points leader was still searching for victory lane.

Jackson was clearly the class of the field as David charged to an early lead then forced the rest of the field to race for second spot. Last week’s Big 10 runner-up slipped around team mate Mark Haddon in the waning circuits to grab his second runner-up finish in two weeks. Henry Hanger and Jeff Ray were fourth and fifth.

Racing continues Saturday, July 26 with all seven classes in action and it will be the final Arnold’s Body Shop Late Model tune-up for Round #7 of the Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Steel Head Late Model Big 10 Super Series on August 2. Gate open at 4:00 PM, Racing at 6:30 PM.

Saturday, July 12 “Big 10” results from Winchester(TN) Speedway

The Kennth Wessner Big 10 Series has been sort of a racefest for north Alabama driver’s with the first five events all being won by some of “Bama’s best and the Top 3 in points all being from Alabama. Saturday night’s Round 6 started out much the same way with number two points man, Jon Miller of Eva, Alabama, setting quick time with a 15.75 mark.
But there were changes in the air. You just new that something was different as three time “Big 10” winner (5 Winchester victories) and point’s leader Jerry Owens was forced to make the feature via a last chance race and Shelbyville hot shoe, Jeff Sanborn was the co-number two qualifier with the “Flintstone Flyer” Roger Dickson out of Flintstone, Georgia.
The Arnold’s Body Shop Late Model Last Chance race saw Mark Todd take an easy win over Jerry Owens with siblings David and Anthony Seibers in third and fourth. McMinnville’s Larry DeLong and Talladega, Alabama’s Dallas Cooper were contesting the final two transfer spots when a last lap altercation left DeLong on the sidelines for the main event. Cooper was fifth and Pulaski’s Jeff Carvell was sixth, in the final transfer position.
When the green flag was unfurled for the 35 lap main event it was all Jon Miller as the Alabamian pulled out to a comfortable margin before number three runner Roger Dickson was involved in an altercation that, though not of his own making, would send the Georgian to the rear under the no fault caution guidelines of the Big 10 series. Roger was not a happy camper but did not give up and would soldier on from the rear.
By lap 15 Miller was beginning to put some good racers a lap down with first Jeff Carvell then David Seibers and Larry Landers all falling victim to Miller’s pace. Dallas Cooper tried desperately to hang on to the lead lap, and did so for about four circuits, but finally fell victim to Miller on lap 18 as David Seibers pitted. Around the midway point, Jimmy Tucker and Jeff Tate retired with outside pole sitter Jeff Sanborn pulling to the infield while running in the top 5. Lapped traffic bunched up the top 6 racers but Miller seemed to be handling the pressure with little trouble. Then with 15 laps to go it seemed that the entire makeup of the race was changing. David Brannon slipped around a faltering Miller for the lead and Shannon Davis was picking off racers with ease. A quick review of the pack showed that Tim Busha was on the move and Jerry Owens was taking no prisoners on his drive towards the front. The last 15 circuits provided a plethora of position changes as Davis, Busha and Owens were coming hard. With three laps remaining Davis eclipsed Miller for second but would run out of time in his efforts to run down eventual winner Brannon. Busha and Owens, like Davis were two of the quickest cars on the track but would run out of time and settle for fifth and sixth respectively, behind Jay Brinkley. Tony Morris had an up and down night, while at times turning laps as quick as anyone, Morris had a couple of close calls and one time even spun to the infield on turns one and two but kept peddling hard and returned to the track to salvage a seventh place finish in front of Jerry Ashley. Coming off the final turn heading for the checkered flag, consy winner Mark Todd slipped under Tommy Davis for ninth spot at the stripe.
The Big 10 points standings tightened up but Owens is still in the cat birds seat with 627 points, followed by Jon Miller with 605. Daniel Miller is third with 587 and Morris climbed to fourth with 583. Jeremy Taylor is fifth with 578 while winner David Brannon(572), Jay Brinkley(560), Jerry Ashley(555) Larry Landers (541) and Dallas Cooper(523) makeup the Top 10. Fifteen places will be paid in the final season points standings and currently, Byron Michael(495), Anthony Seibers(478),David Seibers(465), Shannon Davis(438) and B.J. Sanders(370) makeup the Top 15.
Round number 7 of the Kennith Wessner Ford-Mercury Big 10 series is just three weeks away on August 2nd , back at Winchester Speedway. Don’t miss it!

Dwayne Hicks slipped under Scott Blackwell with three laps remaining to capture his first win of 2003 and become the 43rd different winner of the season. Murfreesboro’s Jeff Anderson recovered from an early caution to push the lead trio across the line while besting fifth place runner Jim Whaley. Open Wheel heat winners Mark Haddon and Alan Holmes led the field to the stripe as Holmes quickly jumped on top followed by teammate Corey Posey and Jeff Ray. Holmes appeared to have win number four well in hand before David Jackson got hooked up. Jackson has eleven top 5’s this season but is still looking for his first victory. The former Super Stock Champion came up short again Saturday night but was clearly a man on a mission and put on a crowd stirring run towards the front after starting in row number four. Henry Hanger was also impressive in his third place drive that edged Posey and five time winner Mark Haddon.

The Outlaw pony main event featured two different races, or so it seemed. After an early wreck that severely crinkled the defending champion Joey Sisk’s Ford Pick-up truck. Sisk was easily the class of the field charging into the lead and like the cowboy in an old western, was riding off into the sunset when a late race caution bunched up the field. On the restart heat winner Brad Sain jumped around Joey and would hold off the Neals’ Body Shop point’s leader for his track leading sixth victory of the season. Four time winner Mike Brashears slipped by the faltering F-150 n the final laps to nab second with three time winner Rick Brown in fourth. Early front runner Bill Sparkman had his best effort of the season by taking fifth.

In the Jamison Inn Mini Stock division, heat winners Tony Patterson and Manual Williams battled most of the way before Patterson turned his attention to three time winner Joe Burns. With eight feature wins between them Patterson and Burns were engaged in a dog fight in the waning laps but to their chagrin both made contact coming off turn two on the final lap and sailed over the high side. Neither car or driver sustained serious damage but fell victim to track rules that state: “When the white flag is displayed the field races back to the checkered flag”.Both failed to earn a top 10 finish but their misfortune was Edwin Taylor’s good luck as Edwin grabbed a place finish. Points leader Stanley James was celebrating his wedding anniversary by capturing the show spot. Joe Jernigan and Jeff Griggs were fourth and fifth in front of Clyde Petty who salvaged a sixth place finish to stay close to Stanley James in the points chase, after an early wreck befell the Mustang driver.

Race Results from Winchester (TN) Speedway, July 5

Fayetteville Flash Randy Gifford became the first driver to garner victories in two different classes by wheeling the Jones Racing #316 to victory in the late model division. Randy had wheeled a Smart Racing open Wheel to victory lane back in May. The win was the first late model win of the season for prolific Late Model owner Billy Wayne Jones of Hazel Green, Alabama.

Mark Todd turned in a masterful performance to grab his best finish of the season by edging five time winner and "Big 10" points leader Jerry Owens for the runner-up spot. Former Duck River Champ David Thompson was fourth with current points leader and last week’s winner Jerry Ashley rounding out the Top 5 by besting Bobby Bradford in Ingleberger Racing mount.

Gifford set quick time during time trials with a 15.67 clocking.

Corey Posey and Alan Holmes pushed Davis but settled for the "place and show" positions in front of last weeks’s "Thrill Show artist Henry Hanger (Henry flipped his ride on the front stretch with his racer bursting into flames!), who had a marvelous recovery to take fourth. Moe Harrison continues to build momentum with a fifth place finish in front of Haddon and David Jackson, who have been red hot of late. Posey won his heat race.

Watch out, here comes the Judge, Randy that is, as Randy Judge grabbed second ahead of Jeff Tate and Rick Currin. Former Track Champion Jerry Ashley joined Jerry Owens as a repeat winner in the Arnold’s Body Shop Late Model division. Ashley started third but quickly jumped on front row starters David Thompson and Randy Gifford then after an early tussle with his Elora(TN) neighbor David Brannon, Ashley went essentially unchallenged for the last half of the race. Thompson garnered third place finish while Mark Todd made a strong run to take fourth in front of Jeff Sanborn. Thompson was the quick qualifier at 15.34.

Early season problems are now long gone and so is Mark Haddon. Haddon’s season has turned into one of dominance of late as the Frankin County hot shoe is starting to make life difficult for his would be competitors. Haddon won the Dash for Cash then cruised to victory in the 25 lap main event. Teammate Shannon Davis recovered from an early spin and charged back through the field to take the runner-up spot. Jeff Ray, driving Steve Garner’s mount had a fine run to take third while points leader David Jackson increased his points lead over Henry Hanger when Hanger suffered a violent flip coming off turn four in the early laps of the feature event. Henry was shaken but otherwise in considerably better condition than his Open Wheel racer. Brashears was sandwiched between a couple of determined drivers as, Joey Sisk had to recover from an early spin to charge back into contention before settling for third. Bruce Fullmer was fourth with Ricky Brown Jr. having his best night of the season by finishing fifth. Ricky Brown also won the Dash for Cash.

Manuals brother and former track champion Pat Williams climbed back into a race car after a lengthy absence and showed he has not lost the touch as Pat drove the Joe Jernigan Mustang to an impressive third place finish. Teammates Edwin Taylor and Joe Burns fought their way through the field after starting 12th and 15th respectively to take fourth and fifth.

Commencing with the June 28 races at Winchester Speedway there will be a new class added to the evenings program. The rules (initial rules -may be adjusted / tweaked as needed) are located at the bottom of this page.

Use a 45 degree angle at exhaust exit. Exhaust exits on driver’s side will also help. Monitoring will be performed from passenger sides (Outside of Speedway / Grandstands, etc;)
