HOMMEL UNDERGOES SURGERY, NEW BENEFIT PLANS ANNOUNCED
Knoxville, TN --- Duayne Hommel, 25, of Newport,
TN, a nationally known dirt Late Model star driver,
underwent surgery early Wednesday afternoon in an
ongoing effort to treat the young racecar driver
who sustained severe head injuries in a traffic
accident on that occurred near Newport, TN on September
23 at 8:00 PM. Hommel’s condition has consistency
improved the past three days while more announcements
have been made regarding benefit projects to assist
Hommel in defraying substantial medical expenses.
“He was supposed to have surgery at 11:30
this morning but they moved it to 12:30 PM this
afternoon,” stated Ron “Flea”
Fleenor, family friend and family spokesperson.
“This morning he was moving his feet, arms
and head and is wanting the hell out of bed. They
were put the trach in and the feeding tube in his
stomach today and everything went great. All his
gauges are ‘still’ good.”
Fleenor’s remarks came minutes after Hommel’s
surgery was completed. Hommel is still in the Intensive
Care Unit and only yesterday, September 30, was
upgraded from critical condition to serious condition.
“Now it’s been a three good days in
a row,” continued Fleenor. “So I am
going to ask everybody to keep doing what you’ve
been doing because it seems to be working pretty
well at this point.”
The outpouring of support and concern from the
entire racing community and industry, crossing the
entire spectrum of motorsports, has been tremendous.
Hommel was severely injured on Tuesday September
23 in a two car accident near Newport. Hommel, who
had just left his race shop and was enroute to pick
up his wife and son, was driving a Chevrolet Envoy
when he was forced to swerve to avoid and on-coming
car as he crested a hill on a two lane road. The
vehicle Hommel was driving struck a ditch and rolled
five times, according to preliminary reports. Hommel
suffered severe head injuries and trauma.
Hommel, the defending Southern Allstars Series
champion, was airlifted to University of Tennessee
Hospital in Knoxville, TN where he is undergoing
emergency medical treatment. He is currently in
critical condition with internal and external bleeding
of the brain. He is currently under the care of
a team of surgeons and specialists and many family
members of friends are holding vigil at the hospital.
Fleenor also revealed that many fund-raising projects
are underway to help raise money for the star driver’s
medical expenses, as well as updated information
on existing projects.
“We had a slight change of plans but Carolina
Performance and Kip Cochran have got him a Mastersbilt
chassis coming to raffle off,” stated Fleenor
Wednesday afternoon. “The fellow helping put
this deal together with Kip is named Woody. They
are putting everything together and build the car
at their shop. If someone wants to donate parts
and get on the car they need to call Kip. There
is still a lot of stuff to be had and (Hommel crew
chief) Tommy (Hicks) is working on helping them
get everything for it.”
The chassis will come from Keith & Tader Masters’
Mastersbilt Race Cars while other components have
been donated by Brinn Transmissions, Peterson Aluminum,
Classic Powder Coat, Sweet Engineering, Winters,
Performance Friction, Quick Car Gauges, Powell Pedals,
Ultra Shield Belts, Oval Craft Seats and Poske Performance.
Addition donations will be announced later.
“We asked them (Masters brothers) and they
said, hell yes, we’re in,” said Fleenor.
“Been that way with about everyone that’s
been asked. If anyone would like to help out just
give Kip a call.”
The raffle tickets for the new Mastersbilt Race
Car and components are now available for $10.00
each. You can purchase the raffle tickets by check
or money order at: Carolina Performance, 1009 Bell
Dowdle Road, Franklin, NC 28734. You can also order

Fleenor also revealed that a benefit golf tournament
is being planned for next month.
“It’s still in the preliminary stages
but ‘Pup’ Thomas of Hoosier Tire is
putting together a benefit golf tournament that
will be held on Friday November 21,” said
Fleenor. “It will be held at the Flagstone
Golf Course in Cleveland, TN.”
Interested participants are encouraged to telephone

Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, Bill Frye of Arkansas,
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Arkansas, Springfield,
Missouri’s Terry Phillips, Pinconning, Michigan’s
Jeep Van Wormer and Jimmy Mars.
The big name invaders could be joined by Midwest
standouts such as three-time UMP Late Model National
Champ Ed Dixon of Washington, Missouri, Randy Korte
of Highland, Illinois, Carpentersville, Illinois’
Dennis Erb, Gibson City, Illinois’ Kevin Weaver,
Kevin Gundaker of St. Charles, Missouri, Shannon
Babb of Decatur, Illinois, Darren Miller of Illinois,
Joey Mack of Benton, Missouri and Rodney Melvin
of Logan, Illinois.
At press time it is unknown what late model competitors
will choose to participate or enter the Commonwealth
Cup at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway. However, over
70 late models were in attendance for last year’s
event.
Whoever the invaders may be, they will have to
contend with a bevy of local and area late model
stars eager for the $15,000 first place check. Heading
the local drivers is defending UMP National Late
Model Champ Terry English of Benton, Kentucky. English
has been choosing races rather than chasing points
this season, though he had been in the top ten in
both UMP and Xtreme Dirt Car Series points earlier
in the year. English added another series to his
resume when he made his first ARCA RE/MAX series
start at Springfield, Illinois qualifying third
and finishing tenth, then following that up with
an outside front row start at the DuQuoin State
Fairgrounds two weeks later. English won the 2000
Commonwealth Cup and has three track championships
at KLMS.
Other local drivers expected to compete for the
large prize award include Mayfield, Kentucky driver
Randy Sellars, a former UMP National Champion, Jeremy
Williams of Lone Oak, Kentucky, one of the hottest
drivers at KLMS this season plus 2003 late model
feature winners at KLMS such as Rod Reed of Mayfield,
hometown driver Tim Brown, Gary Keeling of Paducah,
Tait Davenport and Bobby Dietz.
They should be joined by Illinois drivers such
as Lee Thomason of Marion, Joe Morris of Galatia,
Bill Millikan of Shawneetown, and Larry Hurn of
Olney. Drivers from at least five states are expected
to compete at Kentucky lake for the Commonwealth
Cup late model prize.
Friday night’s schedule begins at 6:30 p.m.
with hot laps, qualifying for the late models, heat
races and the late model Race of Champions, featuring
the top ten qualifiers plus 2 provisionals voted
on by the racing fans! The Race of Champions pays
$2000 to the winner. A full program for modifieds
and limited late models will be run Friday night
as well.
Saturday night will see action starting at 6:30
p.m. with hot laps. Qualifying, heat races and feature
events will be held for the modifieds and limited
late models, while the last chance races and the
50-lap Commonwealth Cup main event will take place
for the late models, with $15,000 going to the Commonwealth
Cup winner.
Tickets can be obtained by calling Kentucky Lake
Motor Speedway at 270-395-3600, and you can visit

Hendrick Named NCMA Vice Chairman
CORNELIUS, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2003) - Richard Petty,
chairman of the North Carolina Motorsports
Association (NCMA), announced today that Rick
Hendrick has been named vice chairman of the NCMA
board of directors. "It
is an honor to accept the position of vice chairman
of the North Carolina Motorsports Association,"
Hendrick said. "I look forward to working
with Richard and the board of directors in promoting
and growing
our sport statewide. "The
NCMA has served as the unifying voice for the racing
industry in
North Carolina for more than a year, and I'm proud
to be a part of that
continuing effort."
Despite his prominence in NASCAR circles, Hendrick
began his career drag racing at age 14 near
his hometown of South Hill, Va., setting records at
a local track with a self-build 1931 Chevrolet.
In 1976, the then-25-year-old purchased
a struggling Chevrolet dealership
in Bennetsville, S.C., dramatically increasing sales
and eventually turning
it into the most profitable franchise in the area.
That success was the
precursor
to the Hendrick Automotive Group, now consisting of
more than 60 dealerships and 4,700 employees
from the Carolinas to California.
In 1984, Hendrick founded Hendrick Motorsports, which
now fields six teams in NASCAR's top two
divisions with drivers Terry Labonte, Jeff Gordon,
Joe Nemechek, Jimmie Johnson, Brian Vickers
and Kyle Busch. Over the years, Hendrick
Motorsports has earned eight NASCAR championships
in the Winston Cup Series (5) and Craftsman
Truck Series (3) combined. Hendrick
succeeds Keystone Marketing Co. Inc. president Roger
Bear as the NCMA vice chairman. Bear will
continue to serve the organization as an
active board member. "Many
thanks to Roger for his efforts and support in getting
this great organization off the ground,"
said Ed McLean, NCMA executive director.
The North Carolina Motorsports Association is
a nonprofit corporation designed and structured
to be an effective representative and proponent of
and for the motor sports industry in North Carolina.
The NCMA is a trade association of businesses
and individuals involved in motor racing in
North Carolina. Further

Corey Dripps Scores First USMTS Win of 2003 During
Fall Jamboree
By: Bucky Doren
Cedar Falls, IA - Corey Dripps scored his first
USMTS win of the 2003
season during the USMTS / Featherlite Fall Jamboree
at Deer Creek
Speedway in Spring Valley, MN. Over the three days
of racing, Corey
Dripps Racing scored one win and a top five finish.
"Day One" was scheduled for Thursday
night. It was a $2,000 To Win night
that never made it to the track. Heavy rain throughout
the afternoon and
evening forced Deer Creek Speedway officials and
USMTS officials to move
the $2,000 to win show to Saturday morning.
Friday was a rough night that saw the old black
magic strike the team
again. While racing for position, the AFCO Racing
Champion Chassis
number "31" broke loose in turn two and
was clocked by heavy traffic
destroying the left front corner of the car.
Corey Dripps Racing worked hard through the night
and into the morning
to ready the car for the next morning. Racing action
for the make-up
Thursday program started at 10:30 Saturday morning.
When the dust
settled later that afternoon, "Mr. Excitement"
was in Victory Lane.
"That was a lot of fun," smiled Corey.
"This car has run great since we
finished it and put it on the track."
"We've been knocking at the door for a few
weeks now," added team
owner/manager Rick Dripps. "After the rough
start to the season, this
really makes the hard work worth while."
The final race during the USMTS / Featherlite Fall
Jamboree was later
that Saturday night featuring a $10,000 to win A-Main.
Corey had earned
enough points over the previous two racing programs
to qualify for a
thirteenth starting position. He worked his way
forward on a narrow
racing groove to finish fifth.
Next up for CDR will be a trip to Red Cloud, NE
as the United States
Modified Touring Series heads to the Speed Bowl
for two shows on
September 26th & 27th. To learn more about the

Scott James has Up and Down Weekend
(BRIGHT, INDIANA) Scott James Motorsports had an
up and down weekend this past weekend. Scott took
his Baylor Trucking / Powell Motorsports #83 BRC
Lazer G-2 Monte Carlo to the Battle of the Bluegrass
Series events at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction
City, KY on Friday night and Bluegrass Speedway
in Bardstown, KY the following night. Both BOB-sanctioned
events paid the winner $3,000 for his efforts. The
weekend wrapped up on Sunday, where Scott made an
appearance at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in nearby
Lawrenceburg, IN.
The weekend got off on a good note, as Scott won
his heat at Ponderosa Speedway and ran a strong
second in the feature event. At Bardstown on Saturday,
Scott started his heat race from the third row and
was battling for the second place spot when he cut
a tire, ending his chance at making the event through
the heat. He had to start at the tail of the consolation
event and was hoping to get a BOB provisional, but
two drivers ahead of him in points failed to make
the show also, which left Scott watching the main
event instead of competing in it. Sunday at Lawrenceburg
was not much better for Scott James Motorsports.
They were running second in their heat race when
a yellow came out and the leader abruptly slowed
and Scott could not avoid making contact with him.
The team decided to load up after the heat race
and forego trying to make the feature through the
consolation event.
“We had a decent weekend, but our car was
much, much better than the results,” said
Scott on Monday. “We ran second at Ponderosa
and I think we had one of the fastest, if not the
fastest car at Bardstown during the heats. It is
a shame that I cut down that tire and we couldn’t
get in on provisional. I think I could have came
from the tail and put on a good show for the fans.
Then at Lawrenceburg, the leader checked up hard
in that heat race and I was right behind him and
couldn’t get on the binders quick enough to
avoid hitting him. We tore up quite a bit of stuff
and decided to load up for the night.”
“The Silver Shark” will next be in
action at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg,
OH this Saturday night for a $2,000 to win ALMS
show. Scott has had some impressive runs this year
at Eldora and hopes to have another one this Saturday
night. For more information on this event, log on

Wendell Wallace Posts Win and Second Place Effort
in Gumbo Nationals
(BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS) Wendell Wallace picked up
his sixth win of the season on Friday night in the
tune-up to the 1st annual Gumbo Nationals at the
Delta Bowl Speedway in Tunica, MS. The win was worth
$1,500 to the team and was a good test session for
the $7,000 Gumbo Nationals, which was held on Saturday.
Wendell was running second late in the Gumbo Nationals
and needed a yellow to catch up with race leader
Steve Russell. The yellow eventually came out, but
their was too many lapped cars in between Wendell
and Russell, so the J&J Steel / MSE Distributing
#88 GRT / Craft Ford Taurus settled for a second
place run and a $4,500 payday.
Wendell Wallace Autosports will return to action
this coming weekend, as the #88 team heads to Wheatland,
MO and Wheatland Raceway for the closing events
of the 2003 season for the MARS Series. Both Friday
and Saturday night will feature $3,000 to win shows
and Wendell figures to be in the mix when the action
heats up in the Show-Me state this weekend. Wendell
ran second in his last outing at Wheatland back
in August and is looking for a couple more strong
runs to give the team some momentum to close the
season out. For more information on this weekend’s
MARS-sanctioned events, log on to www.midamericaracingseries.com.

Brian Birkhofer Heads to 311 After Top Ten Run at
Rome
(MUSCATINE, IOWA) Brian Birkhofer Racing landed
another Ringers Gloves Fast Time Award and a Top
Ten finish in the Xtreme DirtCar Series event at
Rome Speedway in Rome, GA this past weekend. The
quick qualifying lap on Friday night was Birky’s
ninth Ringers Gloves Fast Time Award of the season.
He finished second in the first heat race to earn
a spot in the $20,000 to win, 100-lap feature event,
which was held on Saturday. The Seubert Calf Ranches
/ Daufeldt Transport / Double Eagle Sales &
Embroidery #15b MasterSbilt / Pro Power Monte Carlo
rolled off seventh for the main event, but could
only muster an eighth place finish by the end of
the 100-lapper. Brian is currently second in the
XDCS point standings, 154 points behind leader Scott
Bloomquist with only three events remaining on the
2003 XDCS schedule.
“We just really need to work on our race
setups,” said Birky on Monday. “We have
been good everywhere this year in qualifying, but
have struggled somewhat come race time. We have
been working on race setups for about a month and
a half now and need to continue to keep getting
better and better. Dan (Schlieper) has been really
good the last couple of months and we are really
going to have to step up our slick track program
to be able to beat him.”
Brian will be involved in the shooting of a commercial
tomorrow for one of his sponsors, the Community
Bank of Muscatine. Those of you in the Muscatine,
Iowa area can look forward to seeing the commercial
on your television screens very soon. The #15b will
next be in action this coming Friday and Saturday
night in the XDCS event at 311 Motor Speedway in
Madison, NC. Ringers Gloves qualifying, heat races,
and the Action Performance Dash will take place
on Friday night, with the consolation events and
the $20,000 to win feature on tap for Saturday.

Dan Daniels Takes The $10,000 Win At USMTS Featherlite
Fall Jamboree
By: Bucky Doren
Spring Valley, MN - Dan Daniels scored his first
United States Modified
Touring Series win in grand fashion. Daniels topped
a 130 plus USMTS
Modified field for a $10,000 payday at the USMTS
/ Featherlite Fall
Jamboree at Deer Creek Speedway.
The $150,000 USMTS Featherlite Fall Jamboree purse
featured a $10,000 to
win, USMTS A-Main thanks to Featherlite Trailers,
Deer Creek Speedway
and USMTS. 135 USMTS modified racecars checked in
on Thursday hoping to
be the one at the end of the three special holding
that $10,000 check.
After the forty-seven qualifying events over three
days, the field was
whittled down to a thirty-four-car field set to
fight it out in a fifty
lap A-Main. After two caution periods trying to
complete the first lap,
the racing action went non-stop to the checkered
flag.
Willy Kraft captured the early race lead of the
three-wide starting
field. Daniels, Johnny Bone Jr., and Tony Fraise
slipped in behind and
tried to put some distance between themselves and
the rest of the pack.
Kelly Shryock and Corey Dripps quickly caught the
lead four cars by lap
four.
Bone was able to work his nose under Daniels for
second and shot by on
lap seven. Bone then began hounding Kraft for the
lead. Kraft was able
to hug the bottom groove fending off Bone through
the middle stages of
the race.
As the lead pack approached lapped traffic, Daniels
passed Bone for
second, and he tried for several laps to get by
Kraft for the lead. On
lap forty, Daniels was able to get underneath Kraft
and took the lead.
Kraft was left on the high side and that allowed
Bone, Shryock, Dripps,
and Tommy Myer to slip by over the next few laps.
Once clear of Kraft, Daniels began to open a huge
lead and would cruise
to the Fall Jamboree $10,000 win. Bone would finish
second, and Shryock
finished third. Myer passed Dripps on lap forty-eight
and would finish
fourth. Dripps rounded out the Top 5.

Corey Dripps Wins At USMTS Featherlite Fall Jamboree
(Thursday Make-up)
By: Bucky Doren
SPRING VALLEY, MN - Corey Dripps showed patience
as he worked his way
into victory lane at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring
Valley, MN. It was
the Thursday make-up event for the USMTS Featherlite
Fall Jamboree.
At the drop of the green flag, Mark Noble would
take the early lead.
Noble and Darin Duffy battled early for the lead.
Duffy would hop the
cushion and slip back allowing Noble to take the
lead. The car on the
move early was Corey Dripps who started 9th.
On lap 7, Dripps began looking underneath Noble
for the lead. A yellow
flag would stop the two as they fought for the lead.
Once racing
resumed, Dripps wasted little time working his way
into the lead, and
despite a couple of more yellows, Dripps would hold
for his first USMTS
win of 2003 win.
Noble held off the hard charges from Bruce Hanford
in the closing laps
for 2nd. Hanford would finish 3rd. Duffy worked
his way back up into
4th by features end, and Jon Tesch rounded out the
Top 5.
Jason Connoyer won the non-qualifier feature for
Thursday's make-up
event of the USMTS Featherlite Fall Jamboree.

410 Sprint Bandits to Kick off '04 Season at Devil's
Bowl Speedway!
Lonnie Wheatley - TULSA, Okla. (September 19, 2003)
- The first race dates for the 410 Sprint Bandits
were revealed today, as it was announced that the
410 Sprint Bandits will kick off the 2004 season
at the famed Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite,
TX, on March 19-20 with the 31st Annual Devil's
Bowl Spring Nationals.
Devil's Bowl Speedway promoter Lanny Edwards looks
forward to hosting the first ever event for the
410 Sprint Bandits at his famed high-banked, ½-mile
clay oval. "The Sprint Bandit series is definitely
gonna be a good deal for Sprint Car racing well
into the future," commented Edwards. "It
might take a little time to get it going strong,
but it's going to be the best thing to happen for
410 Sprint Car racing and I want to do all that
I can to help it along."
410 Sprint Bandit series founder Emmett Hahn said,
"We're excited about having our first Sprint
Bandit event at a venue with such great Sprint Car
history." Hahn continued, "Devil's Bowl
Speedway is a first-rate facility that has been
regarded for years as one of the nation's top Sprint
Car tracks, so a two-night show at the Devil's Bowl
is a very appropriate place for us to get this deal
started."
Hahn's 410 Sprint Bandits will feature the use
of the Brodix-developed series head, which has been
specifically developed to significantly reduce the
cost of 410-ci engines as well as extend engine
life. Dash-12 heads will also be legal in the series
without any modifications. All other non-series
heads will be legal as well, although they will
require sleeved-down injectors to compete in the
410 Sprint Bandit series.
Wing rules, including the removal of wicker bills
along with degree and setback rules will be implemented.
This, along with rear tire width and compound rules,
will aid in unhooking the cars, thus enabling the
driver to become a greater part of the equation
and resulting in more competitive and cost-effective
410-ci Sprint Car racing.
The 410 Sprint Bandits will present a schedule
of approximately 25-30 races in 2004. Negotiations
with a number of tracks are currently under way
and additional dates will be announced soon.

ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD "EXPERIMENT" GOES FULL
TIME IN 2004
SPEEDWORLD 2004 WINTERNATIONALS SET FOR FEBRUARY
Two major announcements have been made concerning
the 2004 racing season at
Orlando Speedworld.
Along with the regular Friday night program, Speedworld
will begin a weekly
Saturday night program starting the first weekend
of March, 2004.
Supported by INEX/600 Racing based out of Charlotte,
NC, the Saturday night
shows will revolve around the Legends and Bandelero
cars which will be in
action every Saturday night. The remainder of each
Saturday program will be
filled by other Florida-based "traveling"
series.
The Classic Auto Racing Series has already indicated
it will run a number of
the shows in 2004 as well as the Florida Mini Cup
Racing Association. The
Modified Lites (formerly Dwarf Cars) and Pro Challenge
machines are also
expected to be a mainstay of the Saturday evening
programs.
A number of other groups are being contacted including
TQ Midgets, Outlaw
Modifieds, Mini Sprints and others.
Orlando Speedworld General Manager Dick Westfall
says this is a concept
whose time has come. "We've been trying to
build something here and, despite
some curve balls the weather has tossed at us, we've
been overwhelmingly
successful and that's why I think this thing will
fly as a regular show next
year," says Westfall.
"I've traveled a lot over recent years and
it seems these groups like the
Legends, Classics, Mini Cups, and Mod Lites always
put on a great show
wherever they race," says Westfall. "Unfortunately,
for the most part,
they're treated like second-class citizens most
places they race and don't
really receive the promotion they deserve because
the track is more interested
in promoting their local classes and drivers, and
you really can't blame them
for that," he says.
"But at Speedworld in 2004, the traveling groups
will get the recognition
they deserve and this is going to be one heck of
a show every Saturday night,"
says Westfall.
Westfall also believes the Saturday night programs
will be a boost to the
Bandelero class. Speedworld is the only track in
the State of Florida with
regular weekly racing for the cars geared toward
kids, however, the biggest
problem facing the class has been running on Friday
nights.
"I've talked to parents all over the State
from Jacksonville to Tampa to
Miami who are interested in getting a Bandelero
for their youngster, but it
makes it very difficult to get off work, get the
kids out of school, and make
it to the track on a Friday night," says Westfall.
"But Saturday is a different story. A number
of new cars are being sold
thanks to the fact we're running on Saturday and
giving the families time to
get here and really enjoy the experience,"
he says.
Westfall feels that the Bandelero class will more
than double in size by
mid-2004.
Drivers in other classes echoed Westfall concerning
Saturday night racing.
Long-time Classic Auto Racing Series competitor
George Hall, Jr., who, along
with his son George III have been making the trek
from St. Petersburg to race
the CARS machines since 1997, loves the idea of
running on Saturday.
"Fridays are just a huge hassle for us,"
says Hall. "The traffic is a
nightmare and you basically have to take a half-day
off work just to make it
to the track on time. Saturday is much more laid-back
and traffic's not a
problem which makes for a great family outing,"
he says.
Track GM Westfall also says it's apparent to him
fans already like what they
see. "Saturday we only had about a hundred
people in the grandstands which
was actually better than I thought we'd do with
the show being a make-up from
the previous week's rain out. But on Monday alone
I fielded five phone calls
before noon telling me how much they enjoyed the
show and asking me when the
next show was going to be. I haven't had that kind
of response for the Friday
programs all year," says Westfall.
The new "Hurricane" class will also run
every Saturday at Speedworld.
This bone-stock class of four-cylinder cars will
give virtually anyone a
"taste" of stock car racing without hurting
their pocketbook.
Westfall says the rules are very simple. "A
stock four cylinder car exactly
the way it came from the factory including wheels
and tires. All glass with
the exception of the windshield must be removed.
Headlights and tail lights
must be removed. Rear seat removed for fire safety.
Driver must have an
approved helmet and must wear at least a long sleeve
shirt, pants and no open
shoes. A full shoulder belt and an approved window
net are required. Then
all that's left is to show up and race," he
says.
In addition to the Saturday programs being added
for 2004, Orlando
Speedworld has announced the 2004 Winternationals
to be held the week of
February 9-14.
After a media/practice/BBQ day on Monday, February
9th, there will be five
consecutive nights of racing Tuesday, February 10th
through Saturday, February
14th.
The Legends Cars, Classic Auto Racing Series, and
Bandeleros are already
scheduled to be in action all five nights with the
Baby Grand cars scheduled
to race the final three nights. Other classes are
expected to be added
shortly.

Scott James Looks For Another Strong Run at Bardstown
this Saturday Night
(BRIGHT, INDIANA) Scott James Motorsports will
be back in action this coming Saturday night in
the Battle of the Bluegrass Series event at Bluegrass
Speedway in Bardstown, KY. Scott will compete in
the $5,000 to win show in his Baylor Trucking /
Powell Motorsports #83 BRC Lazer G-2 Monte Carlo.
The team has visited the high banks in Bardstown
on five occasions this year and have three Top Five
finishes and five Top Ten finishes to their credit
in those events.
Scott and his team are coming off a rough weekend,
where it seemed nothing would go their way. Friday
night, the team traveled to Liberty, IN and Union
County Speedway to compete in a $4,000 to win Northern
Allstar Series race. The team brought out a new
BRC Lazer G-2 chassis, but could only garner a 12th
place finish on a track where passing was at a premium.
On Saturday night, the team headed down to Richmond
Raceway in Richmond, KY for a $3,000 to win BOB-sanctioned
event. Scott posted fifth fast time of the entrants
on hand, but was struck in the quarter-panel in
his heat race, resulting in a flat tire. “The
Silver Shark” was forced to take a provisional,
but quickly pulled off the racetrack in the feature.
He ended up in the 19th place spot.
“The new car was good last weekend, but we
didn’t see any good results from it,”
said Scott on Monday. “We started middle of
the pack at Union County on Friday night, but it
was so hard to pass there that we just had to ride
and see what would happen. Then at Richmond, we
got hit in the heat race and we had to take a provisional.
I just pulled in to save wear and tear on the car
and my hand because it was a lost cause starting
so far back. I got a new cast on my injured hand
last week and now only two fingers are exposed,
as opposed to three, and that has made it a lot
harder to drive.”

Shark” and his race team, log on to www.scottjamesmotorsports.com.

Conley's Post Several Strong Runs in Renegade Events
(WHEELERSBURG, OHIO) The Conley Motorsports, Inc.
racing teams posted some impressive runs last weekend,
as they combined for three Top Five finishes and
five Top Ten runs in six events. Both R.J. and Rod
Conley competed in the same events over the busy
weekend. On Friday night, they were in competition
in the postponed $10,000 to win Renegade event at
Portsmouth Raceway Park in nearby Portsmouth, OH.
The following night, the two were back in action
in another $10,000 to win Renegade DirtCar Series
event at K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, OH. Delmas
Conley joined his sons at the event at K-C on Saturday,
but went to the $3,000 to win Freedom 40 at Beckley
Speedway in Beckley, WV on Friday night since he
failed to make the show at Portsmouth before it
was postponed on August 31.
R.J. had the highest average finish of the racing
Conley family, as he finished fourth in the PRP
show and third at K-C. On Friday at PRP, R.J. got
up to the second place spot around lap 65 from his
seventh starting spot, but went too soft on the
left rear and dropped a couple of spots near the
end of the race. R.J. almost picked up his third
win of the season at K-C on Saturday. He was fourth
fast time in his Conley Trucking #71c Rocket / Draime
Grand Prix, won his heat race, and finished third
in the dash to earn an inside second row starting
spot. R.J. was able to lead laps 26-74 of the 100-lap
event, but debris off of a lapped car bent his strut
rod and severely damaged his racecar while he was
leading and he had to settle for a third place run.
Rod had two good runs in Renegade action this past
week as well. He advanced from his 21st starting
position on Friday night to finish seventh in the
PRP event. At K-C on Friday, Rod won his heat race
to earn an eighth place starting spot in the $10,000
event. He worked his way up in the 100-lapper in
his Conley Trucking #71r Rocket / Draime Monte Carlo
to finish in the fifth place spot. Even with two
solid point finishes for “Hot Rod,”
he is still in the fifth spot in the season long
Renegade DirtCar Series point standings.
Delmas had the worst luck of the racing Conley
family, as the patriarch suffered a pair of disappointing
finishes over the weekend. On Friday at Beckley,
Delmas set fast time, won his heat, and was well
on the way to winning the $3,000 feature when he
cut down a tire with 12 laps to go. He headed pit
side and returned with fresh rubber and was able
to finish in the sixth at the pay window. Saturday
was not much better, as Delmas was running solidly
inside the Top Ten when a bolt in his strut rod
came loose. He was forced to retire from the event
and finished last in the 26th spot.
Action will be fast and furious again this weekend
for all three Conley Motorsports, Inc. drivers.
Rod will be in action at the annual Pittsburgher
100 at the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
The $22,000 to win show will be sanctioned by the
Renegade DirtCar Series and will be held on Saturday
and Sunday. R.J. and Delmas will both be in action
at Southern Ohio Speedway in Wheelersburg, OH on
Friday night for an unsanctioned, $3,000 to win
show. Saturday plans for both R.J. and Delmas are
unclear and should be posted at www.conleymotorsportsinc.com
later in the week.

Wendell Wallace Washed Out Over Weekend, Heads Back
to Lebanon I-44
(BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS) Wendell Wallace Autosports
was washed out last weekend at I-44 Speedway in
Lebanon, MO. The team was slated to compete there
on Friday and Saturday night for a $10,000 to win
O’Reilly MARS-sanctioned event, but inclement
weather wiped out both nights of racing. The event
has been rescheduled for this coming Friday and
Saturday, September 19-20, and Wendell Wallace Autosports
is scheduled to return to vie for the $10,000 top
prize.
Wendell was able to pick up the checkers the last
time he visited I-44, as he captured a $3,000 show
in August at the speedway. The team hopes for a
similar finish when they return to Lebanon again
this Friday and Saturday. Wendell competes each

GRT / Craft Ford Taurus.

Brian Birkhofer Gains Crucial Xtreme Points Last
Week, Rome Up Next
(MUSCATINE, IOWA) Brian Birkhofer Racing posted
two strong finishes in Xtreme DirtCar Series events
this past week in efforts to catch point leader
Scott Bloomquist in the point standings. Thursday
night, Brian and his team were in competition at
the Xtreme 9-11 Nationals at Lavonia Speedway in
Lavonia, GA. Brian set fast time in Ringers Gloves
qualifying and finished second in his heat race
to earn a fifth place starting position in the 50-lap,
$10,000 to win event. The Seubert Calf Ranches /
Daufeldt Transport / Double Eagle Sales & Embroidery
#15b MasterSbilt / Pro Power Monte Carlo survived
the caution-filled event and posted a solid seventh
place finish.
Last night, Brian was back in action in the Xtreme
event at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. Brian
posted second fast time in qualifying, won his heat,
and won the Action Performance Dash to earn the
pole position for the 50-lap, $10,000 to win show.
Birky failed to get the jump at the start and fell
back to second and was third on lap 32 when race
leader Dale McDowell had to pit with a flat tire.
That moved Brian up to second, but he could do nothing
with fellow MasterSbilt driver Jimmy Mars over the
final 18 laps and settled for a second place outing.
Brian is still in second place in the Xtreme DirtCar
Series point standings, but did gain some ground
on the leader last week.
“We were good last night at Cherokee,”
said Birky from the road on Monday. “Jimmy
(Mars) just went a little softer on tires then us
and got by us on the opening laps of the race. That,
along with Dale’s flat tire, was the key to
the race. Then at Lavonia, we just went too hard
on tires. I really think we had a good shot for
the win at Lavonia, but we still got a decent points
night out of it. Hopefully we can keep gaining more
and more points on Scott and put some pressure on
him for the final races.”
The $20,000 to win Xtreme show at Rome Speedway
in Rome, GA will be the next stop on the “Way
2 Dirty Tour 2003.” Qualifying, heat races,
and the Action Performance Dash will be held on
Friday night, with consolation events and the 100-lap,
$20,000 to win feature on tap for Saturday. For

Jimmy Mars Gets Second Xtreme Win Last Night at
Cherokee
(ELK MOUND, WISCONSIN) Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound,
WI picked up his second Xtreme DirtCar Series victory
of the season, and the seventh of his career, last
night at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. Jimmy
caught a break on lap 32 when race leader Dale McDowell
had to go pit side with a flat tire, giving “The
Iceman” a lead that he would never relinquish.
The Mars Racing #28 MasterSbilt / Pro Power Monte
Carlo set third quick time around “The Place
Your Momma Warned You About,” won his heat
race, and finished third in the Action Performance
Dash to earn a third place starting position in
the $10,000 to win, 50-lap affair.
Jimmy started out the event in the third spot,
but quickly moved around fellow Mastersbilt driver
Brian Birkhofer to take over second. The #28 followed
race leader Dale McDowell until lap 32 when Dale’s
tire went flat under caution. From there, Jimmy
held off Brian Birkhofer for the remaining 18 circuits
to take the checkers and the $10,800 payday. He
remains third in the yearlong Xtreme DirtCar Series
point standings.
“That was a great win for us,” said
Jimmy on Monday. “We got lucky there with
Dale getting that flat, but I would rather be lucky
then good. I went a little softer on tires then
most of the guys out there and I think that is what
enabled me to get by Birkhofer and get up to second
early in the race. Hopefully we can get on a little
roll here late in the season. I feel good about
Rome this coming weekend because we set fast time
there last year and ran fourth in the feature. Maybe
we can do a little better this year!”
The Mars brothers also competed in an Xtreme series
event on Thursday night at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia,
GA. The Xtreme 9-11 Nationals paid $10,000 to the
